{"id":1125,"date":"2015-01-12T00:00:39","date_gmt":"2015-01-12T05:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/mission-and-identity\/?p=1125"},"modified":"2019-09-18T16:49:53","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T20:49:53","slug":"monday-jan-12-about-birth-welcome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/2015\/01\/12\/monday-jan-12-about-birth-welcome\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday Jan 12 &#8211; about birth &amp; welcome"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monday January 12 &#8211; \u201cWhen I fell into the world&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many work mornings I begin the day with a poem written by George Herbert in the 17th century, \u201cLove Bade Me Welcome.\u201d \u00a0For some reason it\u00a0wakes me into an ordinary day noticing that my ability to be welcomed needs to be renewed again. \u00a0On really good mornings, people from my life come fresh into memory, women and men who could welcome me out of my solipsism and into a live, hospitable world. \u00a0 Magical. \u00a0I owe my life to those people, some of whom read this post, some who have died.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s George Herbert\u2019s poem. \u00a0It\u2019s not exactly &#8220;Today\u2019s Post.&#8221; \u00a0 \u00a0Richard Wehrman\u2019s \u201cWhen I Fell into the World,\u201d a poem completely new to me this morning speaks of birth and being welcomed out into a larger world. \u00a0It appears below my signature.<\/p>\n<p>Love bade me welcome; yet my soul drew back,<br \/>\nGuilty of dust and sin.<br \/>\nBut quick-ey&#8217;d Love, observing me grow slack<br \/>\nFrom my first entrance in,<br \/>\nDrew nearer to me, sweetly questioning,<br \/>\nIf I lacked anything.<br \/>\n&#8216;A guest,&#8217; I answer&#8217;d,&#8217; worthy to be here&#8217;:<br \/>\nLove said, &#8216;You shall be he.&#8217;<br \/>\n&#8216;I, the unkind, ungrateful?\u00a0 Ah, my dear<br \/>\nI cannot look on Thee.&#8217;<br \/>\nLove took my hand, and smiling did reply,<br \/>\n&#8216;Who made the eyes but I?&#8217;<br \/>\n&#8220;Truth, Lord, but I have marr&#8217;d them; let my shame<br \/>\nGo where it doth deserve.&#8217;<br \/>\n&#8216;And know you not,&#8217; says Love, &#8216;who bore the blame?&#8217;<br \/>\n&#8216;My dear, then I will serve.&#8217;<br \/>\n&#8216;You must sit down,&#8217; says Love, &#8216;and taste My meat.&#8217;<br \/>\nSo I did sit and eat.<\/p>\n<p>George Herbert\u00a0 1633<\/p>\n<p>One other thing. \u00a0UDM\u2019s snow plow team came out early clearing campus roads and parking lots. \u00a0I\u2019m all smiles but not all of you will agree with that I bet. \u00a0 Have a blest day even so.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s best to read the poem out loud, with a couple pauses.<\/p>\n<p>john st sj<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ayearofbeinghere.com\/2015\/01\/richard-wehrman-when-i-fell-into-world.html\">Richard Wehrman: &#8220;When I Fell into the World&#8221;<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><em>Posted by Phyllis Cole-Dai on Jan 10, 2015 12:00 am<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2015\/01\/Fall.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1126 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2015\/01\/Fall.jpg\" alt=\"Fall\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2015\/01\/Fall.jpg 480w, https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2015\/01\/Fall-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2015\/01\/Fall-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I fell into the world, it was<br \/>\nas into my mother&#8217;s arms, it was into<br \/>\nthe holding of warmth, the blue-green water,<br \/>\nit was into the beings who blinked<br \/>\nback at me amazed, as I was by them.<br \/>\nI fell from separateness, I fell from constriction.<br \/>\nI fell from the ice castle of myself, through<br \/>\nthe rushing darkness, past screams,<br \/>\npast fear.
