Wednesday February 4 – \u00a0“odd to talk about gardening on the tail end of a blizzard, but \u00a0. . . . “<\/strong><\/p>\n

It turns out that one of Detroit\u2019s most notable urban farms is in a neck & neck voting contest for a $40,000 grant.\u00a0 The usual deal, vote once a day until next Monday;\u00a0 the other competing garden is in Oakland, CA \u2013 a good town too, but this is DETROIT!<\/p>\n

Even if your votes and mine don\u2019t push us over the top, the contest ask offers a close-up of a larger urban farm in the heart of the city (and some pictures of summer time in the city).<\/p>\n

First Snow<\/strong><\/p>\n

The snow
\nbegan here
\nthis morning and all day
\ncontinued, its white
\nrhetoric everywhere
\ncalling us back to why, how,
\nwhence such beauty and what
\nthe meaning; such
\nan oracular fever! flowing
\npast windows, an energy it seemed
\nwould never ebb, never settle
\nless than lovely! and only now,
\ndeep into night,
\nit has finally ended.
\nThe silence
\nis immense,
\nand the heavens still hold
\na million candles, nowhere
\nthe familiar things:
\nstars, the moon,
\nthe darkness we expect
\nand nightly turn from. Trees
\nglitter like castles
\nof ribbons, the broad fields
\nsmolder with light, a passing
\ncreekbed lies
\nheaped with shining hills;
\nand though the questions
\nthat have assailed us all day
\nremain \u2014 not a single
\nanswer has been found \u2013
\nwalking out now
\ninto the silence and the light
\nunder the trees,
\nand through the fields,
\nfeels like one.<\/p>\n
