{"id":1584,"date":"2015-10-26T00:00:34","date_gmt":"2015-10-26T04:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/mission-and-identity\/?p=1584"},"modified":"2019-09-18T16:49:07","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T20:49:07","slug":"oct-26-hurrahing-in-the-harvest-gerard-manley-hopkins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/2015\/10\/26\/oct-26-hurrahing-in-the-harvest-gerard-manley-hopkins\/","title":{"rendered":"Oct 26 &#8211; Hurrahing in the Harvest &#8211; Gerard Manley Hopkins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Monday, October 26<\/strong> \u00a0\u2014 \u00a0{Brilliant sun today. \u00a0Autumn\u2019s winsome beauty \u2014&gt; sun rises at 7:59 and sets at 6:36: each day a little shorter and the sun a little lower in the sky, sunrise a little farther to the south.}. \u00a0 \u00a0This is a season when how far north or south one lives can get our attention. \u00a0I love it that we have a large open space in the north east corner of the McNichols Campus and that McNichols Road (aka 6 Mile) makes our northern boundary a true east-west survey line, keyed to 8 Mile road which dates to the 1789 Northwest Territory mapping project. \u00a0 All that makes it easier to locate this campus against the majestic march of sunrise all through the year, and reminds that Detroit has been around a while. \u00a0 Do I go a little nuts in autumn? \u00a0Sure do. \u00a0You?<\/p>\n<p>19th century\u00a0Jesuit poet, Gerard Manley Hopkins, loved autumn also (see today\u2019s poem just below) \u00a0 Even more than most great poets, GMH rewards \u00a0investment in the sounds of his language. \u00a0Best to read out loud, with pauses, several times.<\/p>\n<p>Have a great day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>john sj<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today\u2019s post \u00a0\u00a0\u2014 \u00a014.
