snow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Friday November 20 \u2014 \u00a0the Work Day poetry list is back from its November break and G Stockhausen is heading home to DC<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>{see G Stock\u2019s Caring Bridge message}<\/p>\n<p>Sharp winds and, compared with an idyllic 1st half of November autumn, cold air is blowing around today: \u00a0it\u2019s easy to imagine Winter on its way despite today\u2019s brilliant sunshine: \u00a01-3 inches is predicted for tomorrow. \u00a0 \u00a0I looked for a poem about winter and found that I\u2019d posted a good one exactly 1 year less 1 day ago (Nov 21, 2014). \u00a0 The more I read David Whyte, the more I become a fan. \u00a0 His\u00a0\u201cThe Winter of Listening\u201d reminds me of a splendid one-liner written decades ago by the mystic Thomas Merton.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no way of telling strangers they are all walking around shining like the sun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Have a blest weekend.<\/p>\n<p>john sj<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today\u2019s Post \u201cThe Winter of Listening\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No one but me by the fire,<br \/>\nmy hands burning<br \/>\nred in the palms while<br \/>\nthe night wind carries<br \/>\neverything away outside.<\/p>\n<p>All this petty worry<br \/>\nwhile the great cloak<br \/>\nof the sky grows dark<br \/>\nand intense<br \/>\nround every living thing.<\/p>\n<p>What is precious<br \/>\ninside us does not<br \/>\ncare to be known<br \/>\nby the mind<br \/>\nin ways that diminish<br \/>\nits presence.<\/p>\n<p>What we strive for<br \/>\nin perfection<br \/>\nis not what turns us<br \/>\ninto the lit angel<br \/>\nwe desire,<\/p>\n<p>what disturbs<br \/>\nand then nourishes<br \/>\nhas everything<br \/>\nwe need.<\/p>\n<p>What we hate<br \/>\nin ourselves<br \/>\nis what we cannot know<br \/>\nin ourselves but<br \/>\nwhat is true to the pattern<br \/>\ndoes not need<br \/>\nto be explained.<\/p>\n<p>Inside everyone<br \/>\nis a great shout of joy<br \/>\nwaiting to be born.<\/p>\n<p>Even with the summer<br \/>\nso far off<br \/>\nI feel it grown in me<br \/>\nnow and ready<br \/>\nto arrive in the world.<\/p>\n<p>All those years<br \/>\nlistening to those<br \/>\nwho had\u2028 nothing to say.<\/p>\n<p>All those years<br \/>\nforgetting<br \/>\nhow everything<br \/>\nhas its own voice<br \/>\nto make<br \/>\nitself heard.<\/p>\n<p>All those years<br \/>\nforgetting<br \/>\nhow easily<br \/>\nyou can belong<br \/>\nto everything<br \/>\nsimply by listening.<\/p>\n<p>And the slow<br \/>\ndifficulty<br \/>\nof remembering<br \/>\nhow everything<br \/>\nis born from<br \/>\nan opposite<br \/>\nand miraculous<br \/>\notherness.<\/p>\n<p>Silence and winter<br \/>\nhas led me to that<br \/>\notherness.<\/p>\n<p>So let this winter<br \/>\nof listening<br \/>\nbe enough<br \/>\nfor the new life<br \/>\nI must call my own.<\/p>\n<p>David Whyte<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2014\/11\/David-Whyte.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-887 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2014\/11\/David-Whyte.jpg\" alt=\"David-Whyte\" width=\"220\" height=\"217\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Friday November 20 \u2014 \u00a0the Work Day poetry list is back from its November break and G Stockhausen is heading home to DC {see G Stock\u2019s Caring Bridge message} Sharp winds and, compared with an idyllic 1st half of November &hellip;
