Here&#8217;s one of e.e. cummings&#8217; poems praising the timeless beauty that underlies our generosities and the demands they make on us. It could be called an Advent poem, interrupting todays agenda with a call for attention and stillness.<\/p>\n<p>john sj<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>i am a little church (no great cathedral)<br \/>\nfar from the splendor and squalor of hurrying cities<br \/>\n&#8211;i do not worry if briefer days grow briefest,<br \/>\ni am not sorry when sun and rain make april<\/p>\n<p>my life is the life of the reaper and sower;<br \/>\nmy prayers are prayers of earth&#8217;s own clumsily striving<br \/>\n(finding and losing and laughing and crying) children<br \/>\nwhose any sadness or joy is my grief or my gladness<\/p>\n<p>around me surges a miracle of unceasing<br \/>\nbirth and glory and death and resurrection:<br \/>\nover my sleeping self float flaming symbols<br \/>\nof hope, and i wake to a perfect patience of mountains<\/p>\n<p>i am a little church(far from the frantic<br \/>\nworld with its rapture and anguish) at peace with nature<br \/>\n&#8211;i do not worry if longer nights grow longest;<br \/>\ni am not sorry when silence becomes singing<\/p>\n<p>winter by spring, i lift my diminutive spire to<br \/>\nmerciful Him Whose only now is forever:<br \/>\nstanding erect in the deathless truth of His presence<br \/>\n(welcoming humbly His light and proudly His darkness)<\/p>\n<p>e. e. cummings<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thursday December 5 Lots of scrambling these days inside and across our work lives.
