{"id":1701,"date":"2016-01-15T00:00:39","date_gmt":"2016-01-15T05:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/mission-and-identity\/?p=1701"},"modified":"2019-09-18T16:48:01","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T20:48:01","slug":"jan-15-we-plant-seeds-that-one-day-willgrow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/2016\/01\/15\/jan-15-we-plant-seeds-that-one-day-willgrow\/","title":{"rendered":"Jan 15 &#8220;We plant seeds that one day will\tgrow.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Friday \u00a0January 15 \u00a0 &#8220;We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction<br \/>\nOf the magnificent enterprise that is God\u2019s work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ken Untener\u2019s last job was as bishop of Saginaw, MI for the last 24 years of his life (d. 2004); I am hardly alone in holding him as one of my saints and heroes. \u00a0About the time he became bishop, complications from a broken leg required amputation of his right leg below the knee. \u00a0One artificial leg did not deter him from his love of hockey. \u00a0Hence my choice of a \u00a0favorite picture, just below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2016\/01\/hockey.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1702 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2016\/01\/hockey.jpg\" alt=\"hockey\" width=\"135\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bishop Unterner wrote this prayer\/poem in 1979. \u00a0It has sometimes been attributed to Bishop Oscar Romero, martyr of El Salvador. \u00a0It seems like a good poem for this week when we lost Gerry Stockhausen, who died too young.<\/p>\n<p>Blessings on your weekend.<\/p>\n<p>john sj<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today\u2019s Post<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It helps, now and then, to step back and take the long view.<\/p>\n<p>The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts,<br \/>\nIt is even beyond our vision.<br \/>\nWe accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction<br \/>\nOf the magnificent enterprise that is God\u2019s work.<br \/>\nNothing we do is complete, which is another way of saying<br \/>\nThat the kingdom lies beyond us.<\/p>\n<p>No statement says all that could be said.<br \/>\nNo prayer fully expresses our faith.<br \/>\nNo confession brings perfection.<br \/>\nNo pastoral visit brings wholeness.<br \/>\nNo program accomplishes the church\u2019s mission.<br \/>\nNo set of goals and objectives includes everything.<br \/>\nThis is what we are about:<br \/>\nWe plant seeds that one day will grow.<br \/>\nWe water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise.<br \/>\nWe lay foundations that will need further development.<br \/>\nWe provide yeast that produces effects beyond our capacities.<br \/>\nWe cannot do everything,<br \/>\nAnd there is a sense of liberation in realizing that.<br \/>\nThis enables us to do something, and to do it very well.<br \/>\nIt may be incomplete<br \/>\nBut it is a beginning, a step along the way,<br \/>\nAn opportunity for God\u2019s grace to enter and do the rest.<br \/>\nWe may never see the end results,<br \/>\nBut that is the difference between the master builder and the worker.<br \/>\nWe are the workers, not the master builder,<br \/>\nMinisters, not messiahs.<br \/>\nWe are prophets of a future not our own.<br \/>\nAmen<\/p>\n<p>Ken Untener, Bishop of Saginaw (deceased)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This prayer was composed by\u00a0Bishop Ken Untener\u00a0of Saginaw, drafted for a homily by Card. John Dearden in Nov. 1979 for a celebration of departed priests.
