{"id":1863,"date":"2016-05-04T00:00:11","date_gmt":"2016-05-04T04:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/mission-and-identity\/?p=1863"},"modified":"2019-09-18T16:47:44","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T20:47:44","slug":"may-4-naomi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/2016\/05\/04\/may-4-naomi\/","title":{"rendered":"May 4 &#8211; Naomi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday, May 4 \u00a0&#8211; from Santa Clara CA<\/p>\n<p>A busy day here, \u00a0an Advisory Board Meeting for the Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurs, a board I have come to love working with. \u00a0Helped by another great poem, passed along to me by a Detroit Mercy faculty friend. \u00a0 You may like it as much as I have learned to while reading it a few times. \u00a0 The poet invites attention to a powerful and subtle wisdom. \u00a0Ordinarily, we find it a greater stretch to be still within happiness than to be still within grief.<\/p>\n<p>Back home tomorrow morning.<\/p>\n<p>Have a blest day.<\/p>\n<p>john sj<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today\u2019s post &#8211; &#8220;So Much Happiness<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\nNaomi Shihab Nye<\/p>\n<p>It is difficult to know what to do with so much happiness.<br \/>\nWith sadness there is something to rub against,<br \/>\na wound to tend with lotion and cloth.<br \/>\nWhen the world falls in around you, you have pieces to pick up,<br \/>\nsomething to hold in your hands, like ticket stubs or change.<\/p>\n<p>But happiness floats.<br \/>\nIt doesn&#8217;t need you to hold it down.<br \/>\nIt doesn&#8217;t need anything.<br \/>\nHappiness lands on the roof of the next house, singing,<br \/>\nand disappears when it wants to.<br \/>\nYou are happy either way.<br \/>\nEven the fact that you once lived in a peaceful tree house<br \/>\nand now live over a quarry of noise and dust<br \/>\ncannot make you unhappy.<br \/>\nEverything has a life of its own,<br \/>\nit too could wake up filled with possibilities<br \/>\nof coffee cake and ripe peaches,<br \/>\nand love even the floor which needs to be swept,<br \/>\nthe soiled linens and scratched records\u2026..<\/p>\n<p>Since there is no place large enough<br \/>\nto contain so much happiness,<br \/>\nyou shrug, you raise your hands, and it flows out of you<br \/>\ninto everything you touch.
