{"id":2012,"date":"2016-09-28T13:20:08","date_gmt":"2016-09-28T17:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/mission-and-identity\/?p=2012"},"modified":"2019-09-18T16:47:34","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T20:47:34","slug":"sept-28-getting-married-in-1935","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/2016\/09\/28\/sept-28-getting-married-in-1935\/","title":{"rendered":"Sept 28 &#8212; Getting married in 1935"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday September 28 \u00a0\u2014<br \/>\nThat we endure absence, if need be,<br \/>\nWithout losing our love for each other.<br \/>\nWithout closing our doors to the unknown.<\/p>\n<p>Readers of these posts may have observed lately that these posts are more family-specific than ordinarily. \u00a0My dad and mom set things up that way by choosing each other with birthdays 4 days apart and then deciding to marry 3 days later, setting in \u00a0motion a family week of rolling celebrations at the cusp of autumn. \u00a0Choosing September 28 was taking advantage of coincidence. \u00a0Choosing September 1935 was more. \u00a0Like their age peers, they entered their thirties battle-hardened by the unforgiving hammering of the world\u2019s Great Depression. \u00a0Quite a time to make one of life\u2019s hope-filled choices: \u00a0\u201cin sickness and in health, in good times are bad, we will trust our futures to each other.\u201d \u00a0Brave for sure and leaving scars that, in the right light, glow.<\/p>\n<p>Marriage is not the only sort of bravery and beauty, and like all the others its moments of wonder are crowded with the plain and ordinary. \u00a0 Perhaps that\u2019s why people pause some times to exult and dance. \u00a0It happens that the University celebrates Homecoming this weekend. \u00a0One of the 15 or so events will happen in the McNichols Campus Ballroom at 4:00 Saturday when some of the many couples who met here will renew their vows. \u00a0For today\u2019s post I am returning to a life-long source of grace for me, \u00a0Denise Levertov\u2019s \u201cPrayer for Revolutionary Love.\u201d \u00a0When I read it \u2014 out loud, with pauses \u2014 these words sometimes bring me close to Hilde and Louie in 1935 and many times to couples who anoint my life with their beauty and bravery.<\/p>\n<p>If you are on the McNichols Road campus for Homecoming, come, married or not. \u2014&gt; \u00a0 Beauty everywhere, all of it flawed, all of it waiting to be seen and heard and touched.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>john sj<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today\u2019s Post \u2013\u00a0\u201cPrayer for Revolutionary Love\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That a woman not ask a man to leave meaningful work to follow her<br \/>\nThat a man not ask a woman to leave meaningful work to follow him.<\/p>\n<p>That no one try to put Eros in bondage<br \/>\nBut that no one put a cudgel in the hands of Eros.<\/p>\n<p>That our loyalty to one another and our loyalty to our work<br \/>\nnot be set in false conflict.<\/p>\n<p>That our love for each other give us love for each other\u2019s work<br \/>\nThat our love for each other\u2019s work give us love for one another.<\/p>\n<p>That our love for each other\u2019s work give us love for one another.<br \/>\nThat our love for each other give us love for each other\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>That our love for each other, if need be,<br \/>\ngive way to absence.\u00a0 And the unknown.<\/p>\n<p>That we endure absence, if need be,<br \/>\nwithout losing our love for each other.<br \/>\nWithout closing our doors to the unknown.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2016\/09\/Denise-Levertov.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2002\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2016\/09\/Denise-Levertov.jpg\" alt=\"denise-levertov\" width=\"186\" height=\"186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2016\/09\/Denise-Levertov.jpg 186w, https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2016\/09\/Denise-Levertov-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Denise Levertov<br \/>\nb.
