{"id":2023,"date":"2016-10-05T11:32:20","date_gmt":"2016-10-05T15:32:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/mission-and-identity\/?p=2023"},"modified":"2019-09-18T16:47:33","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T20:47:33","slug":"oct-5-where-the-hell-is-matt-dancing-all-over-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/2016\/10\/05\/oct-5-where-the-hell-is-matt-dancing-all-over-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Oct 5 &#8211; &#8220;Where the hell is Matt?&#8221; &#8211;&gt; &#8220;Dancing all over the world&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Wednesday \u00a0October 5 \u00a0 Work-day mid-week &#8212; time for dancing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An hour or so ago I was still rubbing sleep around my eyes and looking out my window to the city\u2019s morning traffic and early sunshine. \u00a0When I heard children chanting somewhere around the campus, \u00a0I poked my head out the window and, sure enough, a playful, imprecise column of grade school students were dancing along the sidewalk in front of the university\u2019s McNichols front gate. \u00a0I\u2019m guessing they were kids from the Gesu School across the street, part of the Jesuit parish that is a close neighbor to the university. \u00a0 I kissed my hand to the kids and their teachers; they gave me a playful entrance to this month before the November election that is wearing me out, \u00a0wearing lots of us out, with anger and anxiety and moral fatigue.<\/p>\n<p>The children\u2019s improbable marching song still makes me smile. \u00a0I had the children in mind when\u00a0I went looking back to October posts two years ago for some autumn sounds and sights. \u00a0Look what I found from two years less 5 days ago? \u00a0Can\u2019t imagine a better post to remind the\u00a0\u201cWork Day in a Hard Time\u201d poetry list\u2019s 2207 members (31 countries) of our various neighborhoods\u2019 capacity for surprise and joy, no matter our burdens. \u00a0 \u00a0While you watch\/listen to these 4:53 minutes of dancing, pay attention to the captions naming the places where people dance on the video. \u00a0I\u2019ve never met \u201cMatt,\u201d \u00a0but watching him end the clip dancing alongside his partner and their very young child makes me think good thoughts about him.<\/p>\n<p>I almost always end by encouraging readers to read a poem out loud, with pauses.
