So early it\u2019s still almost dark out.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m near the window with coffee,
\nand the usual early morning stuff
\nthat passes for thought.<\/p>\n
When I see the boy and his friend
\nwalking up the road
\nto deliver the newspaper.<\/p>\n
They wear caps and sweaters,
\nand one boy has a bag over his shoulder.<\/p>\n
They are so happy
\nthey aren\u2019t saying anything, these boys.<\/p>\n
I think if they could, they would take
\neach other\u2019s arm.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s early in the morning,
\nand they are doing this thing together.<\/p>\n
They come on, slowly.<\/p>\n
The sky is taking on light,
\nthough the moon still hangs pale over the water.<\/p>\n
Such beauty that for a minute
\ndeath and ambition, even love,
\ndoesn\u2019t enter into this.<\/p>\n
Happiness.
\nIt comes on
\nunexpectedly.
\nAnd goes beyond, really,
\nany early morning talk about it.<\/p>\n
