{"id":2098,"date":"2016-11-21T00:00:07","date_gmt":"2016-11-21T05:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/mission-and-identity\/?p=2098"},"modified":"2019-09-18T16:47:30","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T20:47:30","slug":"rx-for-reading-detroit-at-thanksgiving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/2016\/11\/21\/rx-for-reading-detroit-at-thanksgiving\/","title":{"rendered":"Rx for Reading Detroit &#8211; at Thanksgiving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Monday afternoon Nov 21<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>English Faculty member,\u00a0Mary-Catherine Harrison, has guest edits poems for\u00a0the list. \u00a0 Her children&#8217;s-book \u201cRx for Reading\u201d continue\u2019s to grow (as of last count 55,000 books have come onto campus and gone out to low-income children and their families). \u00a0Thanksgiving could be a moment to breathe in &amp; out a little and imagine what children\u2019s books can mean to children who don\u2019t have any or many.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s Mary-Catherine\u2019s ask today. \u00a0&#8220;Since it was founded in 2014,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rxreading.org\/\">Rx for Reading Detroit\u00a0<\/a>has distributed over 55,000 books\u00a0for low-income children and families in our community. \u00a0We couldn\u2019t have done it without our student volunteers and members of the Detroit Mercy community who have given their time, money, books, and expertise.<\/p>\n<p>We are facing a shortage of books as we enter this holiday season.\u00a0\u00a0Please consider donating your new and\u00a0gently\u00a0used books for children of all ages. We are in particular need of picture books, early readers, books with characters from diverse cultural backgrounds, and Spanish and bilingual books.<\/p>\n<p>Student volunteers can pick up your donation if you cannot bring it to one of the\u00a0drop-off bins listed below.
