{"id":2446,"date":"2017-11-01T14:04:31","date_gmt":"2017-11-01T18:04:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/mission-and-identity\/?p=2446"},"modified":"2019-09-18T16:45:53","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T20:45:53","slug":"nov-1-the-feast-of-all-saints","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/2017\/11\/01\/nov-1-the-feast-of-all-saints\/","title":{"rendered":"Nov 1  &#8211;  The Feast of All Saints"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday, November 1<br \/>\nThree saints in my life<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m posting All Saints Day like a Jesuit Homie &#8211; \u00a0three Jesuits: one I lived with for years before he died, Art McGovern.\u00a0 The second lived a barely recognized life in the 1500s and was named a Saint in formal Catholic fashion, \u00a0St. Alphonsus Rodriquez.\u00a0 Today\u2019s third saint is familiar to most readers: Gerard Manley Hopkins, another non-famous person during his life. \u00a0 Hopkins\u2019 poem in honor of Alphonsus, whose feast was yesterday, is a tribute to a compelling human being and the wonder of his seemingly un-noteworthy life as a college door-keeper hundreds of years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Mid-week, November chills, blessings as you go.<\/p>\n<p>john sj<\/p>\n<p>p.s. My laptop selectively interrupts this writing by losing its memory unpredictably. \u00a0That\u2019s why Monday\u2019s post played hooky and today\u2019s is pretty late.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Posted on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/2015\/11\/02\/nov-2-the-day-of-all-the-saints\/\">November 2, 2015<\/a><br \/>\n<strong>Monday November 2 \u2013 a saint who lived with us, \u00a0Art McGovern, sj<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This time of year Art McGovern seems to come and find me. \u00a0Yesterday was, in the R Catholic calendar, the feast of all the saints. \u00a0At the opening of the Sunday 12:30 mass, I invited the congregation to think of some one person who had touched their life and pay attention to her\/him as we worshipped. \u00a0I hadn\u2019t chosen my own person yet but as we listened to the readings, I settled on Art, who died at 70 in 2000. \u00a0Art lived close to the ground \u2014 at home with play (\u201chealth food is the kind you like so much you feel good while eating it: \u00a0my 3 are pretzels, ice cream, and bacon.\u201d) and grief, at home with losses and wins, at home \u00a0leading difficult committees, at home with impeccably prepared classes laced with kind teasing and learning (\u201cFr.
