Wednesday, November 29\u00a0\u2014 \u00a0close the semester\u2019s \u00a0finish line.<\/p>\n

What do we want to tell students as they bring this semester in for a landing with final papers and exams? \u00a0\u2014 These fifteen weeks \u00a0demanded work, and patience, mistakes and starting over again, but sweat equity moments \u00a0can be magic, \u00a0turning plodding into dancing, turning hope into joy.<\/p>\n

Poet W H Auden reminds his readers that, when we\u00a0risk hope and pay attention, \u00a0the labor can take us to a date with Love. \u00a0 \u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s worth it\u201d\u00a0\u2014\u00a0 that\u2019s the core promise of a university.<\/p>\n

The chimney sweepers
\nWash their faces and forget to wash the neck;
\nThe lighthouse keepers
\nLet the lamps go out and leave the ships to wreck;
\nThe prosperous baker
\nLeaves the rolls in hundreds in the oven to burn;
\nThe undertaker
\nPins a small note on the coffin saying \u201cWait till I return,
\n\u201cI\u2019ve got a date with Love.\u201d<\/p>\n

And deep-sea divers
\nCut their boots off and come bubbling to the top,
\nAnd engine-drivers
\nBring expresses in the tunnel to a stop;
\nThe village rector
\nDashes down the side-aisle half-way through a psalm;
\nThe sanitary inspector
\nRuns off with the cover of the cesspool on his arm \u2014
