Friday, January 12, 2018<\/p>\n

Gerry Stockhausen passed two years ago today. \u00a0He was grieved by many women and men I know. \u00a0A beautiful presence in this university and in the lives of many people. \u00a0Six days after Stock, died we held a memorial mass and service at Gesu Parish across McNichols Road from us. \u00a0Here is the post from that day. \u00a0 Stock is beautiful to me and to many readers of this post. \u00a0r i. p. \u00a0Mary Oliver ends her poem\u00a0\u201cWhen Death Comes\u201d \u00a0like this: \u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t want to end up simply having visited this world.\u201d \u00a0 \u00a0Stock was not a tourist\u00a0either; \u00a0he inhabited the world.<\/p>\n

Wednesday, January 20, 2016 \u00a0\u2013\u00a0\u00a0\u201cand each body a lion of courage, and something precious to the earth.\u201d
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

About 5:00 pm this afternoon in Gesu Church just north of UDM\u2019s McNichols campus, women and men who have worked with, laughed with, kept commitments with Gerry Stockhausen, sj will gather for a Eucharist of celebration and goodbye. \u00a0When we\u2019ve completed the service, everyone is welcome to come c. 300 yards south to the Jesuit residence, across McNichols, where Gerry lived between 2000 and 2010. \u00a0The UDM Jesuits and our kitchen team have prepared food, and drink, and (thank you Ruth Fichter) \u00a0a great collection of photos from Gerry\u2019s years here (e.g., Stock looks pretty cool in his Tiger\u2019s jersey the day he threw in the first pitch at Comerica park.).<\/p>\n

Even if you can\u2019t make it this afternoon, you are welcome to keep company with us from any distance.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s Post \u00a0<\/strong>\u201cWhen Death Comes\u201d<\/p>\n

When death comes
\nlike the hungry bear in autumn;
\nwhen death comes and takes all the bright coins from his purse<\/p>\n

to buy me, and snaps the purse shut;
\nwhen death comes
\nlike the measle-pox<\/p>\n

when death comes
\nlike an iceberg between the shoulder blades,<\/p>\n

I want to step through the door full of curiosity, wondering:
\nwhat is it going to be like, that cottage of darkness?<\/p>\n

And therefore I look upon everything
\nas a brotherhood and a sisterhood,
\nand I look upon time as no more than an idea,
\nand I consider eternity as another possibility,<\/p>\n

and I think of each life as a flower, as common
\nas a field daisy, and as singular,<\/p>\n

and each name a comfortable music in the mouth,
\ntending,\u00a0as all music does, toward silence,<\/p>\n

and each body a lion of courage, and something
\nprecious to the earth.<\/p>\n

When it\u2019s over, I want to say:\u00a0 all my life
\nI was a bride married to amazement.
\nI was the bridegroom, taking the world into my arms.<\/p>\n

When it\u2019s over, I don\u2019t want to wonder
\nif I have made of my life something particular, and real.
\nI don\u2019t want to find myself sighing and frightened,
\nor full of argument.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t want to end up simply having visited this world.<\/p>\n
