{"id":2541,"date":"2018-01-19T00:00:14","date_gmt":"2018-01-19T05:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/mission-and-identity\/?p=2541"},"modified":"2019-09-18T16:45:45","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T20:45:45","slug":"jan-19-that-day-you-were-absent-from-fourth-grade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/2018\/01\/19\/jan-19-that-day-you-were-absent-from-fourth-grade\/","title":{"rendered":"jan 19 &#8211; &#8220;that day you were absent from fourth grade&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Friday \u00a0January 19 \u00a0 \u00a0\u2014 \u00a0\u201cto stand still and listen to the wind\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last November 25 someone sent me this poem, acting on a hunch that the poet would capture my attention. \u00a0I place poems sent to me this way in a desktop folder. \u00a0Every now and then I can explore the language that readers place on offer. \u00a0 Brad Aaron Modin, today\u2019s poet, is new to me this morning. \u00a0 Whoever sent his words blessed me. \u00a0 Will bless you too perhaps.<\/p>\n<p>Best to read the poet out loud, with pauses.<\/p>\n<p>Right now both the morning sun and my clock tell me it is 8:20 am Eastern Time. \u00a0 Have a blest weekend.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>john sj<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s Post \u00a0\u201cWhat You Missed That Day You Were Absent From Fourth Grade\u201d \u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.awakin.org\/read\/index.php?op=author&amp;sel=Brad+Aaron+Modlin\">Brad Aaron Modlin<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2018\/01\/I-Am.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2543\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2018\/01\/I-Am.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Mrs. Nelson explained how to stand still and listen<br \/>\nto the wind, how to find meaning in pumping gas,<\/em><\/p>\n<p>how peeling potatoes can be a form of prayer. She took<br \/>\nquestions on how not to feel lost in the dark.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch she distributed worksheets<br \/>\nthat covered ways to remember your grandfather\u2019s<\/p>\n<p>voice. Then the class discussed falling asleep<br \/>\nwithout feeling you had forgotten to do something else\u2014<\/p>\n<p>something important\u2014and how to believe<br \/>\nthe house you wake in is your home. This prompted<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Nelson to draw a chalkboard diagram detailing<br \/>\nhow to chant the Psalms during cigarette breaks,<\/p>\n<p>and how not to squirm for sound when your own thoughts<br \/>\nare all you hear; also, that you have enough.<\/p>\n<p>The English lesson was that\u00a0<em>I am<\/em><br \/>\nis a complete sentence.<\/p>\n<p>And just before the afternoon bell, she made the math equation<br \/>\nlook easy. The one that proves that hundreds of questions,<\/p>\n<p>and feeling cold, and all those nights spent looking<br \/>\nfor whatever it was you lost, and one person<\/p>\n<p>add up to something.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2018\/01\/Brad-Modlin.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2542\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2018\/01\/Brad-Modlin.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"179\" height=\"173\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Brad Aaron Modlin<\/p>\n<p>Brad Aaron Modlin earned his MFA from Bowling Green State and his PhD from Ohio University.
