{"id":266,"date":"2014-01-21T00:00:30","date_gmt":"2014-01-21T00:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/mission-and-identity\/?p=266"},"modified":"2019-09-18T16:51:26","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T20:51:26","slug":"feb-28-african-american-historymonth-at-udm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/2014\/01\/21\/feb-28-african-american-historymonth-at-udm\/","title":{"rendered":"Feb 28 African American History\tMonth at UDM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Starting around 1956 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. began to call the world to create the \u201cBeloved Community.\u201d\u00a0 He explained:\u00a0 \u201cI am not talking about some emotional bosh when I talk about love . . . you love those who don\u2019t love you . . .\u00a0 because God loves.\u201d\u00a0 King looks for the\u00a0 \u201ctype of love that can transform opposers into friends.\u201d\u00a0 A love that empowered him to \u201cStand up for righteousness.\u00a0 Stand up for justice. Stand up for truth.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 King believed such love could empower Whites and Blacks together to end poverty and militarism and racism.<\/p>\n<p>To acknowledge the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. (1929) we will \u00a0post one \u201cBeloved Community\u201d text around campus each week and host conversations \u00a0about what\u00a0 \u201cBeloved Community\u201d means for us at UDM as a University <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">in<\/span> Detroit. \u00a0For more information, see: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.udmercy.edu\/news_events\/news\/by-year\/2014\/files\/01-14-MLK.htm\">http:\/\/www.udmercy.edu\/news_events\/news\/by-year\/2014\/files\/01-14-MLK.htm<\/a><\/p>\n<p>2014 is also the 100<sup>th<\/sup> birthday of \u00a0poet and publisher, Dudley Randall.\u00a0 Because of his years in UDM\u2019s library, the library is now one of the rare U.S. Literary Landmarks.\u00a0 To honor his role in the creation of a culture of Black poetry, at UDM, in Detroit, and nationally through Broadside Press, Rosemary Weatherston, Director: Dudley Randall Center for Print Culture, \u00a0will guest edit one work day post each week in February.\u00a0 More details follow.<\/p>\n<p>****** \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0****** \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0******<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s post, \u00a0Tuesday January 21<\/p>\n<p>Beloved Community \u2013 Jan 21-24, 2014\u00a0 &#8212; \u00a0\u201cThe way of violence leads to bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers.
