{"id":2672,"date":"2018-05-07T00:00:11","date_gmt":"2018-05-07T04:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/mission-and-identity\/?p=2672"},"modified":"2019-09-18T16:45:31","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T20:45:31","slug":"commencement-week-a-shout-out-forgraduates-families-and-mentors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/2018\/05\/07\/commencement-week-a-shout-out-forgraduates-families-and-mentors\/","title":{"rendered":"Commencement week &#8211; a shout out for\tgraduates, families, and mentors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Monday, May 7 \u00a0\u2014 Gerard Manly Hopkins, sj \u00a0\u2014 \u00a0beauty &amp; courage<\/p>\n<p>This week the university holds three commencements. \u00a0Graduates, \u00a0families and friends infuse fresh wonder and pride into these ancient rituals of achievement. \u00a0Moms and dads, relatives and friends come dressed to the nines as they watch \u201ctheir graduate\u201d walk, and shake the President\u2019s hand, and receive their diploma from him. \u00a0 Year after year it blows our minds.<\/p>\n<p>St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, encouraged paying attention\u00a0to the choices that led me to where I am now, and to \u00a0celebrate those choices. \u00a0 Catherine McAuley, the founder of the Sisters of Mercy, lived this same wisdom. \u00a0She and her sisters, risked ministering to the brutal poverty of Ireland in the 1800s. \u00a0 \u00a0Catherine often kept watch at a young sister\u2019s death bed, \u00a0sharing her grief at dying so young, and recognizing that the one keeping her company was heartbroken too. \u00a0Catherine \u201ccelebrated\u201d these terrible moments with playful jokes and strong tea.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s poem \u2014 Hopkin\u2019s morning falcon riding sharp wind currents \u2014 may help the reader come close to what commencement\u2019s excitement is all about, \u2014- that is to say, every daring risk students or their faculty take to dare excellence.<\/p>\n<p>Best to read out loud, with pauses.<\/p>\n<p>Have a blest week<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>john sj<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today\u2019s Post \u00a0\u2013 \u00a0\u201c<\/strong>The Windhover\u201d \u00a0To Christ our Lord<\/p>\n<p>I caught this morning morning\u2019s minion, king-<br \/>\ndom of daylight\u2019s dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Falcon, in<br \/>\nhis riding<br \/>\nOf the rolling level underneath him steady air, and striding<br \/>\nHigh there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing<br \/>\nIn his ecstasy! \u00a0then off, off forth on swing,<br \/>\nAs a skate\u2019s heel sweeps smooth on a bow-bend: the hurl<br \/>\nand gliding<br \/>\nRebuffed the big wind.
