{"id":2785,"date":"2018-11-01T00:00:40","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T04:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/mission-and-identity\/?p=2785"},"modified":"2019-09-18T16:45:13","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T20:45:13","slug":"nov-1-all-saints-day-3-jesuit-saints-who-live-in-my-memory-refresh-my-imagination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/2018\/11\/01\/nov-1-all-saints-day-3-jesuit-saints-who-live-in-my-memory-refresh-my-imagination\/","title":{"rendered":"Nov 1 &#8211; All Saints Day &#8211; 3 Jesuit saints who live in my memory &amp; refresh my imagination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thursday, \u00a0November 1<br \/>\n&#8220;Could crowd career with conquest&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m posting All Saints Day like a Jesuit Homie \u2013 \u00a0three Jesuits: one with whom I lived here in Detroit for years before he died, Art McGovern.\u00a0 The second,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0St. Alphonsus Rodriquez,\u00a0lived a barely noticed life in the 1500s and was named a Saint according to Catholic practice in 1888. \u00a0 The third saint is familiar to the list&#8217;s readers: Gerard Manley Hopkins, another non-famous person during his life. \u00a0 Hopkins\u2019 poem in honor of Alphonsus, whose feast was yesterday, is a tribute to a compelling human being and the wonder of his seemingly un-noteworthy life as a college door-keeper hundreds of years ago.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll begin my annual retreat tomorrow with some airport help, \u00a0so the ordinary Friday post stepped ahead by a day.<\/p>\n<p>November chills and strong leaf colors, blessings as you go.<\/p>\n<p>john sj<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) \u00a0 \u00a0Monday November 2 \u2013 a saint who lived with us, \u00a0Art McGovern, sj<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On All Saints Day Art McGovern seems to come and find me. Yesterday was, in the R Catholic calendar, the feast of all the saints. \u00a0He who died at 70 in May of 2000. \u00a0Art lived close to the ground \u2014 at home with play (\u201chealth food is the kind you like so much you feel good while eating it: \u00a0my 3 are pretzels, ice cream, and bacon.\u201d) and grief, at home with losses and wins, at home \u00a0leading difficult committees, at home with impeccably prepared classes laced with kind teasing and learning (\u201cFr. McGovern is like feathers; he makes you laugh while \u00a0you think hard.\u201d said a student one time). \u00a0If someone can be a world class scholar, a beloved teacher, a rabid Ohio State football fan and a kinsman day in and day out . . . . \u00a0well, no surprise he came to mind this morning.<\/p>\n<p>2 &amp; 3) \u00a0<strong>Gerard Manley Hopkins<\/strong> has never lost his capacity to knock me flat when I read him out loud, with pauses. \u00a0His encomium for <strong>Alphonsus \u00a0Rodriquez<\/strong> whose \u00a0feast was yesterday, is no exception. \u00a0 Sure, on this gray November day, out loud with pauses can bless us with surprises.<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alphonsus_Rodriguez\">https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alphonsus_Rodriguez<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today\u2019s Post:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>G.
