Berry poem. \u00a0 A fine beginning to this 2nd last week in February. \u00a0 It\u2019s brief; and, yes, it&#8217;s best to read it out loud with pauses.<\/p>\n<p>Our campus this morning shows off what a steady light snowfall can do for the land and streets and buildings if you give it 7 or 8 hours to work its magic.<\/p>\n<p>Have a blest day.<\/p>\n<p>john sj<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today\u2019s Post &#8211; &#8211; \u00a0Wendell Berry<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It may be that when we no longer know what to do<br \/>\nwe have come to our real work,<\/p>\n<p>and that when we no longer know which way to go<br \/>\nwe have come to our real journey.<\/p>\n<p>The mind that is not baffled is not employed.<\/p>\n<p>The impeded stream is the one that sings.<\/p>\n<p>Wendell Berry<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2019\/02\/Wendell-Berry.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2922\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2019\/02\/Wendell-Berry.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"166\" height=\"218\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wendell Erdman Berry<\/strong>\u00a0(born August 5, 1934) is an American novelist, poet, essayist,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Environmental_activist\">environmental activist<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cultural_critic\">cultural critic<\/a>, and farmer.\u00a0He is an elected member of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fellowship_of_Southern_Writers\">Fellowship of Southern Writers<\/a>, a recipient of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_National_Humanities_Medal\">The National Humanities Medal<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jefferson_Lecture\">Jefferson Lecturer<\/a>\u00a0for 2012. He is also a 2013 Fellow of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Academy_of_Arts_and_Sciences\">The American Academy of Arts and Sciences<\/a>. Berry was named the recipient of the 2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dayton_Literary_Peace_Prize\">Richard C. Holbrooke Distinguished Achievement Award<\/a>.\u00a0On January 28, 2015, he became the first living writer to be inducted into the Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p>On July 4, 1965, Berry, his wife, and his two children moved to a farm that he had purchased, Lane&#8217;s Landing, and began growing corn and small grains on what eventually became a homestead of about 117 acres (0.47\u00a0km).\u00a0They bought their first flock of seven Border Cheviot sheep in 1978.\u00a0Lane&#8217;s Landing is in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_County,_Kentucky\">Henry County, Kentucky<\/a>\u00a0in north central Kentucky near\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Port_Royal,_Kentucky\">Port Royal<\/a>, and his parents&#8217; birthplaces, and is on the western bank of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kentucky_River\">Kentucky River<\/a>, not far from where it flows into the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ohio_River\">Ohio River<\/a>. Berry has farmed, resided, and written at Lane&#8217;s Landing ever since.
