David Whyte introduces this poem as leaving and losing, \u00a0divorce of a dear friend as she leaves her marriage. \u00a0How many losses of a deep love have readers of the Work Day list lived? \u00a0Not all are divorces; \u00a0some tearing losses begin with dying. \u00a0 Is there any grief more powerless than when I come to tell a soul friend goodbye, when I must be the one to look my soul friend in the eye and we hold our look a long time; but finally, I must walk out the door where s\/he continues to die. \u00a0 No matter the loss, we find ourselves living our way into the vast absence that opens in us.<\/p>\n

Above the mountains
\nthe geese turn into

Painting their
\nblack silhouettes
\non an open sky.<\/p>\n

Sometimes everything
\nhas to be
\ninscribed across
\nthe heavens<\/p>\n

so you can find
\nthe one line
\nalready written
\ninside you.<\/p>\n

Sometimes it takes
\na great sky
\nto find that<\/p>\n

first, bright
\nand indescribable
\nwedge of freedom
\nin your own heart.<\/p>\n

Sometimes with
\nthe bones of the black
\nsticks left when the fire
\nhas gone out<\/p>\n

someone has written
\nsomething new
\nin the ashes of your life.<\/p>\n

You are not leaving.
\nEven as the light fades quickly now,
\nyou are arriving.<\/p>\n
