\u201csome momentary awareness comes
\nAs an unexpected visitor.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of my soul friends of many years emailed Rumi\u2019s \u201cGuest House\u201d in March of 2017 when, as now in 2020, Spring whispers to me of \u201cLent\u201d and begins to hint of fresh rebirth in the grass and supple new leaves on our trees. \u00a0In the early sun across our courtyard, this ancient change of seasons has become unmistakable even while it remains tentative.<\/p>\n

When readers send poems, they create a place of quiet in me and sometimes change my plans for a given day\u2019s post. \u00a0So it is this morning. \u00a0Rumi\u2019s poem creates a still place alive with realism and laughter, grief and joy. \u00a0Best to read the poet\u2019s creation out loud, with pauses.<\/p>\n

Have a blest week, the second of this Lent.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s Post \u201c<\/strong>The Guest House\u201d<\/p>\n

This being human is a guest house.
\nEvery morning a new arrival.<\/p>\n

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
\nsome momentary awareness comes
\nAs an unexpected visitor.<\/p>\n

Welcome and entertain them all!
\nEven if they\u2019re a crowd of sorrows,
\nwho violently sweep your house
\nempty of its furniture,
\nstill treat each guest honorably.
\nHe may be clearing you out
\nfor some new delight.<\/p>\n

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
\nmeet them at the door laughing,
\nand invite them in.<\/p>\n

Be grateful for whoever comes,
\nbecause each has been sent
\nas a guide from beyond.<\/p>\n
