Alfonso Rodriquez, sj<\/a>\u00a0was a not-very-professionally-educated door-keeper who lived a barely-noticed life – – decades of simple employment welcoming visitors to the Jesuit college of Majorca in the 1500s – – was named a Saint according to Catholic practice in 1888. \u201cBarely-noticed\u201d or not, while he lived, he caught the poetic attention of Gerard Manley Hopkins, sj. \u00a0His \u201cin honor of St. Alphonsus Rodriquez \u2014 Lay brother of the Society of Jesus\u201d offers readers some of his most lyrical and delicate rhythms and imagery ever.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve never read the poem, prepare yourselves to be astonished and charmed all through the poem, G M H\u2019s cadence and word-choices at every turn. \u00a0 Surely the poem calls for reading out loud, several times, with pauses.<\/p>\n

And, on the fighter, forge his glorious day.<\/p>\n

On Christ they do and on the martyr may;<\/p>\n

But\u00a0be the war within, the\u00a0brand\u00a0we wield<\/p>\n

Unseen, the heroic breast not outward-steeled,<\/p>\n

Earth hears no hurtle then from\u00a0fiercest\u00a0fray.<\/p>\n
