The group chose Martin Luther King Jr&#8217;s expression &#8220;Beloved Community&#8221; for its theme. \u00a0The M&amp;I listserve has taken part in these events by dedicating Wednesday posts to &#8220;Beloved Community&#8221; texts. \u00a0\u00a0We have also used the Thursday post to put a light on the poetry of Dudley Randall in this 100th anniversary year of his birth.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s post from MLK&#8217;s &#8220;Letter from Birmingham City Jail&#8221; and February guest-editor Professor Rosemary Weatherston&#8217;s Dudley Randall posts tomorrow and Friday complete what has been a first for the M&amp;I list, a thematic thread running through an entire month. \u00a0I want to thank Dorothy Stewart and her committee and Professor Weatherston \u00a0for enriching M&amp;I&#8217;s February \u00a0by connecting with the &#8220;Beloved Community&#8221; campus-wide effort and by helping celebrate Dudley Randall, whose work as a UofD librarian resulted in our Library being named a National Literary Landmark. \u00a0 \u00a0More about Dudley Randall tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s post &#8211; Martin Luther King Jr \u00a0&#8212; \u00a0\u00a0\u201cLetter from Birmingham City Jail,\u201d 1963<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Have a good day.<\/p>\n<p>john sj<\/p>\n<p>p.s. \u00a0 \u00a0I&#8217;ve followed the MLK text with a couple paragraphs from Wikipedia and a photo of the MLK statue on the Mall<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a title=\"Birmingham Campaign\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Birmingham_Campaign\">Birmingham Campaign<\/a>\u00a0began on April 3, 1963, with coordinated marches and sit-ins against\u00a0<a title=\"Racism in the United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Racism_in_the_United_States\">racism<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Racial segregation in the United States\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Racial_segregation_in_the_United_States\">racial segregation<\/a>\u00a0in<a title=\"Birmingham, Alabama\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Birmingham,_Alabama\">Birmingham<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Alabama\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alabama\">Alabama<\/a>. The\u00a0<a title=\"Nonviolent resistance\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nonviolent_resistance\">non-violent<\/a>\u00a0campaign was coordinated by\u00a0<a title=\"Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alabama_Christian_Movement_for_Human_Rights\">Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights<\/a>\u00a0and King&#8217;s<a title=\"Southern Christian Leadership Conference\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_Christian_Leadership_Conference\">Southern Christian Leadership Conference<\/a>. On April 10, Circuit Judge W. A. Jenkins issued a blanket injunction against &#8220;parading, demonstrating, boycotting, trespassing and picketing&#8221;. Leaders of the campaign announced they would disobey the ruling.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Letter_from_Birmingham_Jail#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0On April 12, King was roughly arrested with\u00a0<a title=\"Ralph Abernathy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ralph_Abernathy\">Ralph Abernathy<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Fred Shuttlesworth\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fred_Shuttlesworth\">Fred Shuttlesworth<\/a>\u00a0and other marchers\u2014while thousands of African Americans dressed for\u00a0<a title=\"Good Friday\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Good_Friday\">Good Friday<\/a>\u00a0looked on.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Letter_from_Birmingham_Jail#cite_note-RiederGalilee-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>. . . .<\/p>\n<p>King met with unusually harsh conditions in the Birmingham jail.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Letter_from_Birmingham_Jail#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0An ally smuggled in a newspaper from April 12, which contained &#8220;<a title=\"A Call for Unity\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_Call_for_Unity\">A Call for Unity<\/a>&#8220;: a statement made by eight white Alabama clergymen against King and his methods.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Letter_from_Birmingham_Jail#cite_note-RiederGalilee-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The letter provoked King and he began to write a response on the newspaper itself. King writes in\u00a0<em>Why We Can&#8217;t Wait<\/em>: \u201cBegun on the margins of the newspaper in which the statement appeared while I was in jail, the letter was continued on scraps of writing paper supplied by a friendly black\u00a0<a title=\"Trusty system (prison)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trusty_system_(prison)\">trusty<\/a>, and concluded on a pad my attorneys were eventually permitted to leave me.\u201d<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Letter_from_Birmingham_Jail#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>A 1999 study found that the\u00a0<a title=\"Essay\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Essay\">essay<\/a>\u00a0was highly\u00a0<a title=\"Anthology\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anthology\">anthologized<\/a>\u00a0in that it was reprinted 50 times in 325 editions of 58 readers published between 1964 and 1996 that were intended for use in\u00a0<a title=\"College\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/College\">college<\/a>-level<a title=\"Composition studies\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Composition_studies\">composition courses<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Letter_from_Birmingham_Jail#cite_note-14\">[14]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2014\/01\/MartinLutherKingJr.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-295\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2014\/01\/MartinLutherKingJr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2014\/01\/MartinLutherKingJr.jpg 220w, https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2014\/01\/MartinLutherKingJr-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday, February 26 \u00a0&#8211; \u00a0Martin Luther King Jr February nears its end. \u00a0At UDM, this month has seen a remarkable array of events organized by a group lead by Dorothy Stewart (Student Affairs).
