The business community&#8217;s lifeguard is on duty. Here is what you should know as you get in your car \u2014 and we hope yours still runs \u2014 and head to work, albeit on a more indirect route.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/e.ccialerts.com\/a\/hBT60gGAGhvOMB8wixMNshdCxOe\/cdb8047\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Crain&#8217;s<\/em>\u00a0story\u00a0&gt;&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\u201ca more indirect route.\u201d \u00a0 Good line for this morning when the huge system has moved on east and north, the winds stream in from the Northwest, our happiest weather direction, the air feels rinsed clean.<\/p>\n<p>A friend landed at Metro about 11:00 last night and I didn\u2019t want to guess wrong about closed freeways. \u00a0 I turned to the State of Michigan\u2019s M-DOT interactive highway map \u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/mdotnetpublic.state.mi.us\/drive\/\">http:\/\/mdotnetpublic.state.mi.us\/drive\/<\/a>) and began by enlarging a normal airport route (the Lodge to 94) and looking at the orange barrel icons which offer pretty up to date word about traffic conditions. \u00a0I 94 closed between Greenfield &amp; Michigan both ways. \u00a0So let\u2019s try I96 to the Southfield; another orange barrel tells me that The Southfield is closed both ways between Ford and I-94. \u00a0 But there doesn\u2019t seem to be any trouble on Telegraph. \u00a0MDOT\u2019s assistance worked. \u00a0To the airport on time, by a more indirect route. \u00a0 Almost all those roads were clear of flooding. \u00a0 \u00a0Not so a day earlier. \u00a0The longest drive home from campus Monday, that I heard about, was 5 hours between McNichols and Warren. \u00a0Lots of stories of battered cars and basements and campus elevators. \u00a0 A hammer of a storm.<\/p>\n<p>But when I pulled up my blinds this morning and saw sun dancing with the trees outside my window, the storm has passed, an elixir. \u00a0 Of course, beauty and weather-relief do not heal all wounds \u2014<br \/>\n\u2014\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 not all the storm damage is repaired;<br \/>\n\u2014\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 another young black man, Michael Brown, shot dead in the street by a police officer in Ferguson Missouri;<br \/>\n\u2014\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Yazidi people driven from their homes in Northern Iraq by well-armed fanatics who exult in their genocide on Youtube.<\/p>\n<p>Sheer beauty can look inadequate for repairing violent storm damage. \u00a0But I doubt it. \u00a0Beauty does not deceive when we find more spring in our step and smiles in our eyes. \u00a0Its work is reminding us that deep down, under the exhausting burdens of our adult commitments, lives a wellspring of sacred grace.<\/p>\n<p>Blesses as we absorb storm damage and turn into today.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>john st sj<\/p>\n<p><b>Today\u2019s Post<\/b><\/p>\n<p>William Carlos Williams understood about life-weariness and beauty\u2019s restorative powers. \u00a0 Try reading it aloud once or twice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The Manoeuvre<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I saw the two starlings<br \/>\ncoming in toward the wires<br \/>\nBut at the last,<br \/>\njust before alighting, they<\/p>\n<p>turned in the air together<br \/>\nand landed backwards!<br \/>\nthat&#8217;s what got me &#8212;<br \/>\nto face into the wind&#8217;s teeth.<\/p>\n<p>William Carlos Williams<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday August 13 \u2014 Here\u2019s the lead story this morning for Crain\u2019s Detroit Business on line.
