{"id":721,"date":"2014-08-28T00:00:53","date_gmt":"2014-08-28T00:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/mission-and-identity\/?p=721"},"modified":"2019-09-18T16:50:18","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T20:50:18","slug":"august-28-a-parable-for-teachers-at-years-beginning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/2014\/08\/28\/august-28-a-parable-for-teachers-at-years-beginning\/","title":{"rendered":"August 28 &#8212; A Parable for Teachers at Year&#8217;s Beginning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thursday \u00a0August 28 \u00a0 Denise Levertov \u00a0\u201cUncertain Oneiomancy&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This Denise Levertov poem stretches me. \u00a0It\u2019s a challenge to stay with her metaphors, follow each turn without being too distracted by what she, the poet, is up to. \u00a0At this stage, my 5th or 6th reading over a couple years, I think she writes a parable for teachers beginning a Semester, aware of the burdens students bring with them before they get into the course\u2019s rhythm of work and challenge and discovery and, sometimes, the exultation of discovery. \u00a0Teachers can fret about all that students might miss if we teachers can\u2019t open worlds to their imaginations.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of teachers I know, myself too in the years I taught regularly, come to trust the pace of teacher-student work and the rhythms of learning. \u00a0It&#8217;s a challenge to trust our abilities as guides in perilous journeys and at the same time trust the power and depth of the students we try to mentor.<\/p>\n<p>The work week is nearly over. \u00a0Have a blest day.<\/p>\n<p>john sj<\/p>\n<p><b>Today\u2019s Post<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>Uncertain Oneiromancy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I spent the entire night leading a blind man<br \/>\nthrough an immense museum<br \/>\nso that (by internal bridges, or tunnels?<br \/>\nsomehow!) he could avoid the streets,<br \/>\nthe most dangerous avenues, all the swift<br \/>\nchaotic traffic . . . I persuaded him<br \/>\nto allow my guidance, through to the other<br \/>\ndistant doors, though once inside, labyrinthine corridors,<br \/>\nsteps, jutting chests and chairs and stone arches<br \/>\nbewildered him as I named them at each swerve,<br \/>\nand were hard for me to manoeuver him<br \/>\naround and between. As he could perceive nothing,<br \/>\nI too saw only the obstacles, the objects<br \/>\nwith sharp corners; not one painting, not one carved<br \/>\ncredenza or limestone martyr. We did at last<br \/>\nemerge, however, into that part of the city<br \/>\nhe had been headed for when I took over;<br \/>\nhe raised his hat in farewell, and went on, uphill,<br \/>\ntapping his stick. I stood looking after him,<br \/>\nwatching as the street enfolded him, wondering<br \/>\nif he would make it, and after I woke, wondering still<br \/>\nwhat in me he was, and who<br \/>\nthe I was that took the long short-cut with him<br \/>\nthrough room after room of beauty his blindness<br \/>\nhid from me as if it had never been.<\/p>\n<p>Denise Levertov\u00a0\u00a0 <i>Sands of the Well<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Oneiromancy<\/b>\u00a0(from the Greek\u00a0<a title=\"Oneiros\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oneiros\">Oneiros<\/a>) is a form of\u00a0<a title=\"Divination\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Divination\">divination<\/a>\u00a0based upon\u00a0<a title=\"Dream\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dream\">dreams<\/a>; it is a system of\u00a0<a title=\"Dream interpretation\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dream_interpretation\">dream interpretation<\/a>\u00a0that uses dreams to\u00a0<a title=\"Prediction\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prediction\">predict<\/a>\u00a0the future.
