From my end of campus where the big parking lot opens a wide sky scape, it rose about half way between McNichols and the Northeast corner of Calihan Hall. At the December solstice, if we are lucky enough for a sunny dawn, it will rise right over the corner of Calihan. Sweet.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s another Denise Levertov about the Christian metaphor &#8220;Lamb of God.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Have a good day.<\/p>\n<p>john sj<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Agnus Dei by Denise Levertov<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Given that lambs are infant sheep,<br \/>\nthat sheep are afraid and foolish,<br \/>\nand lack the means of self-protection,<br \/>\nhaving neither rage nor claws, venom nor cunning,<br \/>\nwhat then is this \u2018Lamb of God\u2019?<\/p>\n<p>This pretty creature, vigorous to nuzzle at milky dugs,<br \/>\nwoolbearer, bleater, leaper in air for delight of being,<br \/>\nwho finds in astonishment four legs to stand on,<br \/>\nthe grass all it knows of the world?<br \/>\nWith whom we would like to play,<br \/>\nwhom we\u2019d lead with ribbons,<br \/>\nbut may not bring into our houses because it would soil the floor with its droppings?<\/p>\n<p>What terror lies concealed in strangest words,<br \/>\nO lamb of God that taketh away the Sins of the World:<br \/>\nan innocence smelling of ignorance, born in bloody snowdrifts,<br \/>\nlicked by forebearing dogs more intelligent than its entire flock put together?<\/p>\n<p>God then, encompassing all things, is defenseless?<br \/>\nOmnipotence has been tossed away, reduced to a wisp of damp wool?<\/p>\n<p>And we frightened, bored, wanting only to sleep<br \/>\ntill catastrophe has raged, clashed, seethed and gone by without us,<br \/>\nwanting then to awaken in quietude without remembrance of agony,<br \/>\nwe who in shamefaced private hope had looked to be plucked from fire<br \/>\nand given a bliss we deserved for having imagined it.<br \/>\nis it implied<br \/>\nthat we must protect this perversely weak animal,<br \/>\nwhose muzzle\u2019s nudgings suppose there is milk to be found in us?<br \/>\nMust hold to our icy hearts a shivering God?<\/p>\n<p>So be it.<br \/>\nCome, rag of pungent quiverings, dim star.<br \/>\nLet\u2019s try if something human still can shield you, spark of remote light.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday November 12 The march of the sunrise heading south across our northern sky stirs my blood on sunny mornings as autumn ripens.
