{"id":807,"date":"2014-09-26T00:00:58","date_gmt":"2014-09-26T00:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/mission-and-identity\/?p=807"},"modified":"2019-09-18T16:50:11","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T20:50:11","slug":"sept-26-the-equinox-and-6-mile-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.udmercy.edu\/poetry\/2014\/09\/26\/sept-26-the-equinox-and-6-mile-road\/","title":{"rendered":"Sept 26 &#8211; The Equinox and 6 Mile Road"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Friday September 26 \u00a0\u2014 \u201cA little faith will see you through&#8221;<\/b><\/p>\n<p>One\u00a0sunrise-sunset calendar for Detroit tells me that today is\u00a0the autumn equinox, that Detroit has precisely \u00a012 hours of daylight (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunrisesunset.com\/calendar.asp\">http:\/\/www.sunrisesunset.com\/calendar.asp<\/a>). \u00a0 \u00a0The play of sunrises and sunsets with our particular place on the earth gives the north east corner of campus a privileged vantage point. \u00a0The corner offers a pretty vast patch of sky to the eye, compliments of the big parking lot &amp; soccer\/lacrosse field, \u00a0<b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">and<\/span><\/b>\u00a0because it\u00a0borders on McNichols Road (or as the\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">cool new baseball hats on sale as of yesterday in the McNichols book store\u00a0<\/span>say \u00a0\u201c<b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">6 Mile<\/span>.\u201d)<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">and<\/span><\/b>\u00a0because<b>\u00a0<\/b>McNichols Road is a surveyor line east-west street. \u00a0So today\u2019s equiniox sun rose dead center down the middle of the street giving early east bound drivers fits. \u00a0 Besides all that, \u00a0the combination of UDM\u2019s big sky right next to surveyor-line 6 Mile Road \u00a0lets me track sunrises as they march a little farther to the south each day until December&#8217;s winter solstice when the sun will rise just about over the north-east corner of Calihan Hall, \u00a0 Then sunrise begins to trek north a little bit each day until the height of summer. \u00a0 It took \u00a010-15 years at UofD before it dawned on me that I had fallen in love with the parking lot\u2019s big sky and the east-west precision of 6 Mile. \u00a0How about you?
