Nearly 300 alumni, faculty, students and friends of Detroit Mercy gathered April 28 to honor seven alumni of University of Detroit, Mercy College of Detroit and University of Detroit Mercy. One alumnus from each college or school was chosen to receive the award for their success in their chosen field and their work in the community. Check out the other videos, too. Charles E. Lucas, M.C., ’59 — College of Engineering & Science
Professor of Surgery, Wayne State University
After graduating from University of Detroit, Lucas earned his medical degree from Wayne State University where he completed his surgical training and became board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care. He joined WSU in 1967 as an instructor in surgery and has been a full professor since 1975 receiving several honors including the Distinguished Alumni Award and the Trailblazer Award. Over his career, he has trained more than 4,000 medical students and 500 surgical residents.
He practices at the Detroit Medical Center and is well-known for his research in the fields of shock, trauma and acute care surgery. His nearly 500 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters are regularly cited by other researchers and have led to improved patient care. He has shared his expertise at than 800 formal presentations at medical events around the world and has served on many national organizations and is currently vice chairman of the American College of Surgeons Foundation.
