Tomorrow, Detroit Mercy Dental and Law students put their college days behind them by graduating. On Saturday, students from the McNichols program take that important step. These alumni join some 87,000 living alumni of University of Detroit, Mercy College of Detroit and Detroit Mercy, using their Jesuit and Mercy education to lead and serve in the world.
Here’s a snapshot of the graduating class of 2017.
Detroit Mercy Dental
Commencement is 9:30 a.m. Friday at Calihan Hall on the McNichols Campus. The address will be given by Leo E. Rouse, D.D.S., dean of the Howard University School of Dentistry and former president of the American Dental Education Association.
- 144 new dentists and 26 new hygienists will collect their degrees.
- Of the dental class, 83 are from Michigan, 33 are from other states, 21 are from Canada; international students come from South Korea and Jamaica.
- 17 students in graduate dental programs and eight in the accelerated program will also graduate.
Detroit Mercy Law
Commencement is 5 p.m. Friday at Calihan Hall. The Hon. Denise Page Hood, chief judge of the U.S. District Court’s Eastern District of Michigan, will give the address.
- 158 students will graduate today.
- 50 percent will receive a J.D.
- 46 percent will receive the dual Canadian/U.S. J.D.
- 4 percent will graduate from the joint J.D./M.B.A. program.
- 99 members of the graduating class are women and are between the ages of 23 and 50.
- 59 members of the graduating class are men and are between the ages of 23 and 42.
McNichols Campus
Commencement is at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13 at Calihan Hall. An honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree will be presented to James J. Padilla ’69, ’70, who for years was president and chief operating officer of Ford Motor Co. and a member of the company’s board of directors. He will also give the commencement address.
- 1,058 students will receive degrees; some 650 will participate in the commencement ceremony tomorrow.
- 612 people ranging in age from 20 to 64 will receive bachelor degrees.
- 70 percent of those receiving bachelor degrees are female.
- 294 of the undergraduate degrees being awarded (the most of any college or school) are Bachelor of Science in Nursing, followed by 132 Bachelor of Science degrees and 63 Bachelor of Arts degrees. Together, these degrees represent 80 percent of of the bachelor degrees awarded this school year.
- 93 percent of the bachelor degree recipients hail from Michigan, but there are 15 other states represented.
- Undergraduates also come from Canada, Russia, El Salvador, Great Britain and Zimbabwe.
- 430 students between the ages of 22 and 66 will graduate with master’s or specialist degrees.
- 59 percent of students earning these degrees are female.
- The most-awarded master’s degree will be the Master of Arts with 64, followed by the MBA with 54 and Master of Science, with 50.
- Master and specialist degree recipients hail from Michigan and 16 other states and 7 countries.
- Doctoral degrees will be awarded to 15 students ranging in age from 28 to 70.
- 11 of the 15 students receiving doctoral degrees are women.
- Doctoral degree graduates come from Michigan, two other states and China.
