Ninety-seven percent of Detroit Mercy undergrad students receive some form of financial aid. Much of that comes in the form of scholarships made possible by donors.
As we begin our Support our Scholars crowdfunding program (it runs through March 5) we thought you’d like to read about the impact scholarships have on our students. Our grateful students often send thank you notes to donors, this is one of them.
My name is Mawj Zuma and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your donation. I was honored to receive this scholarship and I am thankful it has allowed me to stay in the program.
I am in a traditional Nursing program and will graduate in May. Having visited local hospitals over the years for various family-related medical illnesses, I became interested in a career in nursing. It became a passion of mine and led me to volunteer at an urgent care center. A nursing career is ideally suited to me for several reasons. It is intellectually challenging and requires constant re-education to stay current with the latest scientific studies. This ensures a long and satisfying career for people like me who have a natural intellectual curiosity. A nurse also works very closely with patients, often providing mental and emotional relief by assisting in the process of disease diagnosis and treatment. My academic plans have allowed me to learn and take advantage of great opportunities that have improved my personal life and professional career.
I have had a hard time paying my tuition because I could not afford it. My parents could not support me financially. I asked my cousins to cosign me for an alternative loan but they could not help. I also went to a financial aid office multiple times every semester to ask for help. I have been praying every semester that I would be able to stay in the program. I finally talked to Associate Dean of the McAuley School of Nursing Jaime Sinutko about my situation and she was able to help me. I was almost ready to drop out of school because I had no other option. I cried when I was told that you paid my tuition.
This donation will help me achieve my educational dreams. I can spend more time on my studies and less time worrying about my tuition. I will feel great when I reach back and help somebody else become successful in the future. I believe dreams come true now.
Thanks again for your generosity and support,
Mawj Zuma
