A Master of Community Development alumnus from Detroit Mercy is getting attention for his work to restore and revive Detroit’s once thriving East Warren neighborhood.
Joe Rashid, who finished his coursework in December and will walk in this year’s May graduation ceremony, is commercial co-chair for the East English Village Neighborhood Association. He says that group is working with the community to bring back businesses to the area, which has only about 40 percent business occupancy. He and his work were the subject of a story in a recent edition of the Detroit News.
The work is an extension of his master thesis, which he worked on with several other Detroit Mercy students, on how to revive the business community in that neighborhood, which is on Detroit’s far east side. This project is called Restorin’ E. Warren.
