Last week, alumnus Glynn Lunney ’58 died at the age of 84. He was honored with a brief profile on NBC News’ Sunday Today with Willie Geist.
Lunney graduated from University of Detroit with a bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering and was instrumental in helping the United States land on the moon. But he was best known as the man whose quick thinking on the ground led to the plan that returned the crew of the troubled Apollo 13 safely to Earth.

Lunney was only one of several University of Detroit alumni who helped put men on the moon. Several of them shared their remembrances for a 2019 story in Spiritus that can be read at udmercy.edu/spiritus.
