Tonight, the NCAA men’s basketball scoring record set 53 years ago by Pete Maravich will most likely be broken by Detroit Mercy’s phenom Antoine Davis.
Detroit’s No. 0 — whose jersey was retired after his last game at Calihan Hall last week— has the best average in the nation right now with 28.7 points per game. He needs 26 points tonight against Youngstown State to pass Maravich’s 3,667 career points.
If you want to know how big a story this is in the sports world, you can check out stories in The Detroit News, New York Times, The Washington Post, and ESPN in the UK among dozens and dozens of other media outlets. (Some of those links go to stories behind a paywall.) And lest you think Davis is just chasing records and not being a team player, WXYZ-TV in Detroit talked to some of his teammates to set that record straight.
Tonight’s game against Horizon League quarter-final game against top seed Youngstown State is in Youngstown and starts at 8 p.m. You can watch tonight’s Horizon League quarter-final game on ESPN+ and the Watch ESPN app. Or you can listen to the action on the radio at WLQV 92.7 FM and 1500 AM FaithTalk Detroit with the Voice of Detroit Mercy Basketball Dan Hasty and Earl Cureton ’11.
