Graduate School Scholarship Programs for the Health Professions

Pre-Health Titans, graduate school can be expensive! Fortunately, there are programs designed to assist students who are going into one of the Health Professions field of study such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Physician Assistant, etc. The National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program (NHSC SP), Health Professions Scholarship (HPSP) and VA Health Professionals Scholarship Program each provides tuition as well financial assistance to eligible students in exchange for services provided. We will provide information for these three specific programs and how eligible students can apply!

The National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program (NHSC SP)

This program awards scholarship to eligible students who are pursuing primary care health professions training. Students in return commit to providing primary care health services in health professionals shortage areas. The NHSC SP provides a full year of scholarship support and students commit a minimum of two years of full-time services. Along with payment of tuition and eligible fees, a monthly stipend will be provided to students for living expenses while pursuing a health professions degree. The program provides support for scholars for up to four years. Eligible disciplines include Physician, Dentist, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife and Physician Assistant.  Please review Eligibility Requirements for the NHSC Scholarship Program for an extensive list of eligibility requirements for the NHSC Scholarship Program.

To apply,

  1. Review the NHSC Scholarship Program Application and Program Guidance (NHSC SP APG) (PDF – 635 KB).
  2. Complete an online application, including required documents.

Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP)

The HPSP Program gives students the opportunity to pursue a medical degree through the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Eligible Scholars are able to attend the Medical School of their choice. Scholars in the HPSP Program complete the same medical training as their peers as well as basic officer training and military rotations during clinical years. When enrolled into the HPSP Program, their tuition is covered by the U.S. Government in exchange for services in the military. Therefore, if a student completes medical school in four years, they are required to be a military doctor for at least four years. The HPSP also provides a monthly stipend to students while enrolled  in this program. The eligible disciplines for this scholarship program are Physician, Nurse, Dentistry and Pharmacy! Please review for extensive eligibility information and how to apply here!

VA’s Health Professionals Scholarship Program

This program awards scholarships to medical students in exchange for service at the VA. The benefits of this program includes tuition, fees, books and equipment as well as a stipend for students for 2-4 years. For each year of support, students are required to give 18 months of service to the VA. Eligibility Requirements include applicants must be enrolled in, or accepted for enrollment in, an academic program located in the
United States that prepares graduates to meet the VA qualification standards for employment. In addition, applicants must be citizens of the United States and pass a background investigation. Please review for more information and how to apply for the VA’s Health Professions Scholarship Program!

MCAT/DAT Prep, Clinical Skills and Profile Day for Pre-Health Titans – April Newsletter

It is great to collaborate with organizations that support pre-health Titans. The US Army collaborated with three pre-health advisors from metro Detroit universities to create the first Clinical Skills Day on April 1, 2023. Approximately 80 students fought heavy rains to have hands on activities in the following areas:

  • Sutures
  • Venipuncture
  • Blood Pressure
  • Patient notes
  • Concussion exams

This program was such a success that plans are being made for next year.

The College of Engineering and Science will host a free Profile Picture Day next week, April 21 between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.  Current Titans and alumni are welcome to sign up.

Titans are welcome to come to the Interview Practice workshops this week. In addition to the graduate school interviews and the committee letter meeting, students will likely have Situational Judgement Tests. CASPer, KIRA and AAMC PreVIEW are SJTs and have impromptu, timed responses that are keyed into a terminal or video recordings. This are skills that are different from traditional interviewing. Connect with the Center for Career & Professional Development or schedule a meeting with your pre-health advisor. Individual practice for Titan in application cycles continues in the summer months.

It is a Good Day to be a Pre-Health Titan! Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Medical and Pre-Podiatry students can take a 1 credit class to prepare to demonstrate excellence in the DAT and MCAT exams. This is our 3rd summer with this partnership with the Princeton Review. Priority hours with a Detroit Mercy Pre-Health Advisor for application/interview prep is combined with the faculty and expertise of the Princeton Review Instructors. The final days of registering for the Princeton Review / Detroit Mercy Live online MCAT prep course and DAT prep course is here.  Register today! Classes start May 8th.

Titans can view the full April Pre-Health Newsletter.
