University of Detroit Mercy’s initiative to strengthen the institution’s ability to support U.S. military veterans is nearing its fundraising goal.

The University’s crowdfunding initiative, Veterans Helping Veterans, which can be found on our crowdfunding site, seeks contributions toward a crowdfunding goal of $50,000 to establish a new Veterans Lounge for student veterans who are studying at the University.

This lounge provides an opportunity for ROTC students and veterans to network and help them connect with the support services available at the University that they need to be successful. Thus far, 16 donors have helped raise $36,525 to date toward the goal of $50,000, but we need your help for the final push.

From 1951-91, more than 4,000 cadets trained on the campus of University of Detroit and University of Detroit Mercy. Thanks to their dedication, the University was ranked 12th as one of the Best Colleges for Veterans in the 2018 edition of the U.S. News & World Report‘s “Best Colleges.”

In addition, as a 2018 Military Friendly School, Detroit Mercy has been ranked in the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace military service members, veterans and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus. The University was also designated a Gold-certified Michigan Veteran-Friendly School by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency in 2018.

Also, please join us on Saturday, Sept. 29, for an ROTC and Veterans Alumni Reunion during Homecoming Weekend 2018. Brig. Gen. Michael Dudzik, USAF (ret) ’75, chairs a committee of former Army and Air Force ROTC cadets that is organizing this reunion. To read more about this work, visit Detroit Mercy’s online edition of Spiritus magazine or this story that appeared on this blog last year.
