University of Detroit Mercy School of Optometry student Aiseosa Iyahen recently earned national recognition from the American Optometric Association (AOA).
Iyahen, a second-year student at UDM, was a finalist in the 2026 AOA Blast from the Past Challenge, a competition in which students and residents present an optometric topic that they are passionate about. She presented on the evolution of contact lenses at the AOA’s optometry meeting in June.
“This achievement highlights Iyahen’s dedication to scholarship and her commitment to advancing the profession through a deeper understanding of its history,” said Amy Ferguson, clinical associate professor and director of student success at Detroit Mercy School of Optometry.
Winners of the Blast from the Past Challenge are determined by a combined vote of audience members and a judging committee. Iyahen’s presentation earned top honors and national recognition among peers and professionals in optometry.
In addition to presenting live during AOA’s annual conference, each finalist received a $1,000 stipend.
