Professor of Philosophy Juan Carlos Flores has been awarded a three-year, $274,796 research grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to support the translation and publication of a major medieval philosophy text.
The grant, awarded through The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Scholarly Editions and Translations program, will fund research from 2027 through 2029 led by Flores.
The project, titled An Annotated Translation of Henry of Ghent’s Summa, art. 73–75 (The Questions on Language) (in 2 volumes), will produce an English translation, introduction and scholarly notes for articles 73, 74 and 75 of the Quaestiones Ordinariae (Summa) of Henry of Ghent, a medieval philosopher and theologian who lived from 1217 to 1293.
The three articles focus on the philosophy of language and will be translated from Latin into English for print and digital publication.
Flores will collaborate on the project with Steven Marrone, professor emeritus at Tufts University.
This is Flores’ second NEH grant supporting research in medieval philosophy. His first NEH-funded project resulted in a 478-page critical edition, published Sept. 9, 2026.
The new project will make an important medieval text on language more accessible to scholars and researchers by providing an annotated English translation alongside the original Latin scholarship.
The NEH’s Scholarly Editions and Translations program supports collaborative teams that edit, annotate and translate foundational humanities texts that are important to a new scholarship but are not available in adequate editions or translations.
