UDM receives $1 million in federal funding for cybersecurity center

Cybersecurity students work with wires.U.S. Congressman Shri Thanedar recently secured $1,031,000 in federal funding for University of Detroit Mercy. This funding is part of the Commerce, Justice, Science, Energy and Water Development, and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act of 2026. This critical investment will help establish a Cybersecurity Operations Center at UDM.

“Since coming to Congress, I have made it a key priority to bring federal dollars back to every corner of my district,” Thanedar said. “In Congress, I have brought Community Project Funding to all 20 towns in Michigan’s 13th District for the first time in more than 50 years. As a member of the Homeland Security Committee, I know firsthand the importance of cybersecurity facilities like these to protect Americans from the increasingly sophisticated cyber threats they face from at home and abroad. I am grateful for the partnership of University of Detroit Mercy in making this facility a reality.”

The funding will also create opportunities for UDM students to learn and grow in cybersecurity, said President Donald B. Taylor.

“This state-of-the-art cybersecurity center will provide our students one-of-a-kind training in the cybersecurity field and position them well to compete for jobs in the cyber and national security spaces after graduation,” Taylor said. “We are grateful to Congressman Thanedar for his advocacy in securing this funding, which will create an innovative educational opportunity for our students.”

Thanedar represents Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, which includes Detroit, Downriver and the Grosse Pointes.
