University of Detroit Mercy student Liberty Brooke Stevens is using her voice to advocate for literacy, creative expression and social justice.
Stevens is entering her second year at UDM and is pursuing the University’s five-year Criminal Justice and Intelligence Analysis program with a minor in Psychology. Recently she was featured on FOX 2 News Detroit to discuss her newly published chapbook, God is a Lesbian, released through Bottlecap Press, as well as her volunteer work with RX for Reading.
According to Stevens, the interview gave her the opportunity to highlight the importance of literacy and access to books for young readers.
“It was an absolute honor to be provided an opportunity to spread the mission of RX for reading,” said Stevens.
For Stevens, literacy extends beyond reading, calling it a matter of equity and opportunity.
“Literacy is a social justice issue,” she said. “Read to your neighborhood’s children and read banned books.”
In addition to her advocacy work, Stevens continues to pursue her creative passions through poetry and writing, using storytelling to encourage dialogue and inspire others.
Her appearance of FOX 2 not only displayed her accomplishments as a published author but also highlighted the importance of investing in literacy and ensuring every child has access to books and creative mentorship.
As she continues her journey at UDM, Stevens hopes to use both her education and her writing to make a lasting impact on her community.
