Detroit Mercy and Beaumont Hospital’s new program – BS Biology in Histo-technology

Detroit Mercy has an amazing opportunity for science students looking to not only obtain a Bachelor’s Degree but have a clinical internship as their senior year!

“In the clinical setting, we play the role in… preparing slides for our pathologist to read and diagnose our patients. So any solid tissue that comes down to the laboratory. So if anyone ever had their tonsils out or maybe they got a biopsy… We also do specialized testing on those slides to help the pathologist make a diagnosis.”

Have you ever considered a career in Histo-technology? Not sure what Histo-technology is? Jamie Pert, Program Director for the Schools of Histo-technology at Beaumont Hospital-Royal Oak sat down with Pre-Health Advisor Carmen Gamlin to discuss the field of Histo-technology, roles of a Histo-technologist and how Detroit Mercy Titans can get a jump start on applying to this program! This is a new affiliation agreement between Detroit Mercy and Beaumont Hospital-Royal Oak.

(Titan resource) Recommended Course Sequence BS Histotech 3+1 Program (1)

Jamie now directs an internship program out of Beaumont Hospital that enables students to become certified Histo-technologists (HTL) upon graduation.

“It’s a very exciting field; it’s a very open field. There’s a lot of jobs and a lot of career opportunities for students.”

Many of you may wonder, “how do patients benefit from histo-technology?” Jamie explains that in the field of Histo-technology there is no patient interaction, but Histo-technicians play a vital role in the diagnosis and care of the patient.

“Were the middle man between them and the diagnosis they get from the pathologists. So were a crucial step in creating those slides and doing the specialized testing… for example for breast cancer patients: There is specialized testing that gets performed to determine what kind of treatment that they will qualify for. So all of that gets performed by the histo-technologist here at Beaumont.”

How do Detroit Mercy science students benefit from this relationship with Beaumont Hospital-Royal Oak Histo-technology program? Detroit Mercy Titans applying for this program are considered affiliated students. Affiliated students get priority through the acceptance process which is a huge benefit because only 6 students are accepted into this program a year. There is also the opportunity to complete a B.S. in four years and become eligible for a HTL certification. Titans, you have the opportunity to graduate with credentials! This certification makes you ideal for a job in any laboratory. The histo-technology internship program at Beaumont has had a 100% placement rate in the last five years! Applications are due April 15 every year and affiliated students are able to apply as early as their sophomore year. What an awesome day to be a Titan!

Dr. Jamira Jones MD MPH is now a practicing Emergency Medicine Physician in Denver, Colorado. She Graduated from Detroit Mercy with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and speaks about the educational path she took upon graduating from Detroit Mercy.

“I wanted to see different hospital systems and see how people function differently in various systems…”

Dr. Jamira Jones offers good news and advice to future health care workers who are struggling to find volunteering opportunities in hospitals during the current pandemic.

“I think with the development of the vaccine, it’s going to be great and opportunities are going to be coming in the near future for students to really get some volunteering and shadowing experience.”

“It’s difficult right now for students to do the volunteer work but I think it is a great opportunity to explore other options that you’re interested in to become a well rounded individual…these things you can bring to your interview and applications.”

“Find ways to give back during the pandemic at your local charities, food banks and shelters since you can’t shadow at hospitals at this current time.”

Dr. Jones provides a reflection of her time at Detroit Mercy.

“I think it was a rigid and challenging work course being a Biochemistry major and it really helped me hone in my study skills to prepare me for Medical School.”

Leonardo Romero-Baraja, shares tips on applying to Medical School

Leonardo Romero-Baraja, a ReBuilDetroit Scholar and Honors, Biology Student provides three tips that will give current and perspective students a competitive edge when applying for Medical School.

“Challenge Yourself! Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself! No matter how big or small…don’t be afraid to take the hardest classes…Being able to show you took on  challenges and came out a better person, regardless of what the result was after that challenge is a big plus in any school’s eyes.”

“Do what you love! Be yourself in everything you do! Do what makes you happy…Pick extracurricular activities with that in mind. Don’t feel like you have to replicate or do exactly what others have done before you in order to succeed…Pursue volunteer experiences that interest you.”

“Be reflective! Make sure you’re reflective in everything you do as you experience it…Make sure you’re thinking about that experience at the clinic or that experience you had volunteering…You’re going to be asked to think about how those things changed you as a person. It will only benefit you to start to think that way as you progress through your years of undergrad and as you do these extracurricular activities and volunteer experiences…keep a journal…write how you felt at that moment and after that moment.”

Leonardo was recently accepted to Michigan State University College of Human Medicine through their Early Assurance Program!

Jada Nelson, shares advice for Detroit Mercy pre-health students.

“I think that an important thing to do when you first start off in the science classes is find a mentor or find someone that is going to help guild you through the process.”

“Figure out what you are passionate about – Who you are and who you want to be as a person….When you do that you will always have the motivation”.

“Make sure you make good connections with professors because those are the people who will be writing your letters of recommendation. Having an A in the class is not making a connection with your professor. It is about going to office hours or maybe being part of their research lab….they are also good mentors because they are there and want to see you succeed”.

Jada Nelson, a ReBuilDetroit scholar, earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology 2020. She is a full time researcher as she launches the next stage of her career.
