MCAT/DAT Prep, Clinical Skills and Profile Day for Pre-Health Titans – April Newsletter

It is great to collaborate with organizations that support pre-health Titans. The US Army collaborated with three pre-health advisors from metro Detroit universities to create the first Clinical Skills Day on April 1, 2023. Approximately 80 students fought heavy rains to have hands on activities in the following areas:

  • Sutures​
  • Venipuncture​
  • Blood Pressure​
  • Patient notes​
  • Concussion exams

This program was such a success that plans are being made for next year.

The College of Engineering and Science will host a free Profile Picture Day next week, April 21 between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm.  Current Titans and alumni are welcome to sign up.

Titans are welcome to come to the Interview Practice workshops this week. In addition to the graduate school interviews and the committee letter meeting, students will likely have Situational Judgement Tests. CASPer, KIRA and AAMC PreVIEW are SJTs and have impromptu, timed responses that are keyed into a terminal or video recordings. This are skills that are different from traditional interviewing. Connect with the Center for Career & Professional Development or schedule a meeting with your pre-health advisor. Individual practice for Titan in application cycles continues in the summer months.

It is a Good Day to be a Pre-Health Titan! Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Medical and Pre-Podiatry students can take a 1 credit class to prepare to demonstrate excellence in the DAT and MCAT exams. This is our 3rd summer with this partnership with the Princeton Review. Priority hours with a Detroit Mercy Pre-Health Advisor for application/interview prep is combined with the faculty and expertise of the Princeton Review Instructors. The final days of registering for the Princeton Review / Detroit Mercy Live online MCAT prep course and DAT prep course is here.  Register today! Classes start May 8th.

Kent State University Recruits future Podiatrists at Detroit Mercy Thursday, March 23 at 1pm

  • Did you know that Kent State DPM Admisisons will take either the MCAT or DAT for your application?
  • Did you know that a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine manages the care of the lower etremity: ciculatory, dermatological, diabetes, orthopedic etc. 
  • A career in podiatric medicine can include surgery, sports medicine, orthopedics, biomechanics, geriatric care, pediatric care as well as primary care.
  • Podiatric medicine is to the foot and ankle what ophthalmology is to the eye and cardiology is to the heart, but it is a separate medical school.

MSU College of Human Medicine Roundtable for pre-med students in Metro Detroit

Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine will host its “Everything you want to know about becoming a medical student, but were too afraid to ask” roundtable discussion, which will help prospective students gain first-hand knowledge on the process of applying for medical school, candid conversations with MSU’s medical educators & students, networking, and food. This event is open to students ( freshmen – alumni), community partners, and medical educators in the region.

Too often pre-grad school students do not use the resources for campus career services. Here are 3 things for you to use this month from the Center for Career and Professional Develpment, CCPD. 

  1. Handshake (our online job board) has both on campus as well as off campus jobs, internships etc. It is specifically for Detroit Mercy Titans.
  2. The Detroit Mercy Campus Career Fair is Feb 9th from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. This in person event has employers AND Free Professional pictures for you to use for your profiles on Blackboard, LinkedIn, Zoom, email, and graduate school applications. I will see you there in the picture room this Thursday! 
  3. CCPD is the office with interview prep with the Career Consultants and also with this online program, THE Big Interview.
