Assistant Professor of English Stephen Pasqualina‘s essay on Zora Neale Hurston’s ‘Barracoon’ was featured in the Summer 2023 issue of MELUS, which is the official journal of The Society for the Study of the Multi-Ethnic Literature of the United States.

The article is titled, “Before the Ship and the Plantation: Zora Neale Hurston’s Barracoon and Blackness as Totality.” Pasqualina examines how Hurston’s book on Oluale Kossola, one of the last survivors of the transatlantic slave trade, offers alternative approaches to understanding the history of transatlantic slave and its afterlives.
