New this school year, the University is partnering with Beyond Basics to provide an opportunity for Detroit Mercy students to be trained as a tutor.
Beyond Basics is looking to hire and train college students to serve as one-on-one tutors resulting in grade-level reading improvement for K-12 students enrolled in schools in the greater Detroit area.
Reading tutors must be available Monday through Friday during school hours. Competitive pay is being offered at $20 per hour. Professionals with varied backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
All applicants must be able to work on-site in Detroit and be able to attend paid training in Southfield. The position is not remote. One year of tutoring experience is preferred.
Reading Tutors are trained to work one-on-one with individuals utilizing Beyond Basic’s program curriculum. Tutors work with 4-6 students per day (1-hour session per student or group) each week during school hours to improve literacy and ensure the students complete the program successfully and are able to apply the concepts learned.
Founded in 2002, Beyond Basics is a student-centered, literacy-focused nonprofit located in metro Detroit. It uses proven methods to provide holistic, multi-sensory literacy programming to unlock the power or reading. Beyond Basics brings students to literacy proficiency in underperforming K-12 schools.
