University of Detroit Mercy will celebrate Homecoming 2019 on Sept. 20-21. Join the Fall Festival-themed festivities as you reconnect with the University through two exciting days filled with food, fun and celebrations.

Attendees will enjoy several exciting activities, including zip lining, casino games, carnival games benefiting Detroit Mercy student groups and a beer and wine tent.

Alpha Sigma Nu Civil Rights Lecture – 6 p.m.

Ford Life Sciences Building, Room 113

Alpha Sigma Nu, the honor society of Jesuit colleges and universities, hosts a civil rights lecture featuring Detroit native and Detroit Mercy alumnus Kevin Boyle ’82. The award-winning author of “Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights and Murder in the Jazz Age,” will discuss civil rights events in Detroit.

Friday, Sept. 20

School of Dentistry’s Titan 10 Unite Continuing Education Course – 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Student Union Ballroom

The School of Dentistry presents a continuing education course featuring a multidisciplinary approach to head and neck cancers. According to research studies, 30% of cancers of the head and neck region occur in the oral cavity and, if left untreated, can have devastating effects on critical life functions. Hit the links for 18 holes of golf during the School of Law’s fourth annual golf tournament and dinner. Packages include bag services, golf cart and driving range access, a buffet dinner and souvenir gift. Learn more and register.

Engineering & Science and Architecture Class of 1969 Reunion – Noon

Join fellow College of Engineering & Science and School of Architecture alumni celebrating the 50th anniversary of graduation with a tour of Detroit. It begins with lunch at Z’s Villa and continues with tours along Woodward Avenue aboard the Q-line, Little Caesars Arena and Detroit’s M-1 Rail headquarters. Learn more and register.

The unraveling of nutty people, holding onto immature love and uncovering one’s sexuality are themes Tennessee Williams explores in three short stories adapted into three one-act plays. No tickets are required.

Detroit Mercy Visit Day for prospective students – 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Tour du Titan Bike Ride — 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

School of Law: 9 a.m. start; McNichols Campus: 11 a.m. start

Embark on a bicycle tour of Detroit and the neighborhoods surrounding Detroit Mercy’s School of Law and McNichols Campus. Avid cyclists can meet at the School of Law at 9 a.m. and ride to the McNichols Campus. From there, casual riders can join the tour and depart at 11 a.m. for a ride through neighborhoods surrounding the McNichols Campus. Cost of the ride is $10. Learn more and register.

Searching for Africa’s Lost Dinosaurs – Engineering Building, Room 120

Professor Nizar Ibrahim, Detroit Mercy’s world-renowned paleontologist, might be best known for unlocking the mystery of the Spinosaurus, the predatory, sail-backed dinosaur so large it even surpassed the better-known Tyrannosaurus Rex in body length. But to him, the discovery is just one piece in a much larger puzzle. Come learn more and hear his story in this thrilling workshop.

Estate Planning and Pitfalls 101 – Engineering Building, Room 134

Robert Perry from Butzel Long law firm will share the basics of estate planning, taxes and charitable giving. Perry boasts over 30 years of experience in several facets of estate and business succession planning, life insurance trusts, charitable remainder trusts, personal estate planning, estate taxation and individual retirement accounts. Refreshments will be available.

Job Hunting in the Age of Technology – Reno Hall, Room 165

Join Detroit Mercy’s career development professionals Tracey Knowles and Gene LaPouttre as they offer tips for successfully making a career or job change in the digital age. Today’s job search process is fully integrated with technology and understanding the process is key to your hiring success. You will also learn about Detroit Mercy’s career resources available to you as an alumnus.

Detroit Mercy Fall Festival — 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Join us on the McNichols Campus for a day filled with fun activities, food and celebrations. There is something for the whole family to enjoy. Activities include zip lining, casino tables, carnival games benefiting Detroit Mercy student groups, a scavenger hunt, bonfire and beer and wine tent (for those 21 years or older). Cost of admission to the festival is a non-perishable food item or personal hygiene product for the University’s food pantry.

Homecoming Car Show — 11 a.m.

Check out an impressive display of vehicles, from vintage and muscle cars to an automobile from the Detroit Grand Prix. New this year is a People’s Choice award, which will be voted on by Homecoming guests.

Campus Tours — 11:30 a.m.

Join prospective students and their families attending Visit Day for a tour of Detroit Mercy’s McNichols Campus to see its latest updates and developments.

Flag Football – 11:30 a.m.

Practice fields south of Calihan Hall

Pigskins will fly during the Homecoming flag football tournament. Put together a team to compete against alumni and current students. To register, call the Student Fitness Center at 313-993-1781. Cost is $75 per team, consisting of 7-10 players.

Kappa Beta Gamma Reunion Lunch — Noon
