Maria Esther Hammack, a Mexican scholar and public historian, is set to present virtually to the Detroit Mercy community on Thursday, Sept. 30 at noon.
Hammack’s presentation “Against the sanction and recognition of slavery: Examining the links that Black and Mexican abolitionists forged in the Struggle for Black Liberation” centers the Black diaspora in Mexico, the Black experience across transnational frontiers and the shared histories of slavery, liberation and abolition in North America. Hammack is the 2021-23 McNeil Center’s Barra Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania.
The virtual event is sponsored by Detroit Mercy Libraries and in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.
