Detroit Mercy basketball officially returns this week, with both the Titan men’s and women’s basketball programs opening the 2022-23 seasons on the hardwood.
The Titan men’s basketball team opens the new season at home, hosting nearby Rochester University on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at Calihan Hall. Detroit Mercy visits fellow Jesuit institution Boston College on Friday, Nov. 11, before hosting Ohio in a home game on Wednesday, Nov. 16.
Behind standout Antoine Davis, the Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year, the Titans open the 2022-23 season with 10 of 13 games on the road leading into Christmas. Head coach Mike Davis enters his fifth year leading Detroit Mercy.
In his final collegiate basketball season, Davis, who already holds the Detroit Mercy school record with 2,734 points, takes aim at Pistol Pete Maravich’s all-time NCAA mark in career scoring (3,667 points). He could become just the 11th player ever in NCAA Division I history to surpass 3,000 points early in the season.
The Titan men’s squad is coming off a 14-win season, which included a 10-7 mark in Horizon League play. The red, white and blue also played well in Calihan Hall a season ago, posting a record of 9-1 on Dick Vitale Court in 2021-22.
A new-look Titan women’s basketball program, with new leadership, opens the season Monday, Nov. 7 at North Dakota. Detroit Mercy’s first home game is Sunday, Nov. 13 against Canisius.
Kate Achter enters her first season as head coach of the Titan women’s basketball team, after helping lead an impressive turnaround at a fellow Jesuit institution, Loyola University Chicago. Achter helped lead Loyola to an 18-win season in her final season, the most for the Ramblers since the 1988-89 season.
She helped guide Loyola from a two-win team her first year to double-figure wins in each of her final four seasons. The Titan women’s program returns seven players from a season ago, but also features several new faces. The roster also has six players from Spain and one from Portugal, including Irene Murua, who led the team in rebounding in 2021-22.
Throughout the season, fans can listen to Detroit Mercy men’s basketball games on WLQV 92.7 FM and 1500 AM FaithTalk Detroit.
