Women’s and Gender Studies program announces student writing contest winners

The Women’s and Gender Studies program at Detroit Mercy is delighted to announce the winners of the 2022-23 Undergraduate Writing Contest. Nine students were awarded prizes in three categories:

Poetry category

  • First place — Cari Gamlin, “I Came from Soil”
  • Second place — Jeremy St. Martin — “The Queer Monologues”
  • Third place — Aly Porcerelli, “All I Want”

Short Prose category

  • First place — Sam Lickey, “Nicotine in the Car” (personal essay)
  • Second place — Kenia Contreras, “Not All Are Bastards” (short story)
  • Third place — Sam Gillmore, “Women Belong In the Kitchen” (personal essay)
  • Honorable Mention — Kristel Hope Ndakwe, “The Flowers: A Creative Imitation of Virginia Woolf’s ‘The Mark on the Wall'” (short story)

Scholarly Essay category

  • First place — Alexa Krauth, “Why It Is Important for Women to Be in Politics”
  • Second place — Cari Gamlin, “The Construction of the Woman Frankenstein: How the Perfect Woman Is Created in the Early Modern Period”
  • Third place — Charnay Hatten, “Sexuality and Political Power”
