University Statement on Supreme Court Affirmative Action Ruling

Dear friends,

As many of you know, the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn affirmative action on June 29, 2023, will have a significant impact on institutions of higher education throughout our country. We pray for all of our friends and member institutions who will experience an array of challenges due to this decision, but most importantly for all students who will be directly affected by the court’s actions.

At Detroit Mercy, our commitment to inclusivity and diversity represents a critical foundation in fulfilling our Catholic, Jesuit and Mercy mission. By bringing together talented students with different perspectives and rich life experiences through our holistic admissions process, our Detroit Mercy community learns to care for, respect and love one another in meaningful ways as we move forward on our shared educational journey. We stand as fortunate witnesses to our students’ passions, creativity and curiosity as they work diligently to apply their education to the needs of their communities. We also remain incredibly proud that our students are varied in many characteristics and humbled that they bring their gifts to our campus and community to share with others throughout our city and region.

Education invites and challenges all of us to pursue and engage in enhanced intellectual discourse. The diversity and respect shared among our faculty, staff, students, alumni, neighbors and friends reflect the very best of our community, our region, and our country in this endeavor.  It is through our celebration of diversity and inclusivity that we learn how to best help one another and our world.

Detroit Mercy is committed to offering all students an affordable, high-quality education and we are determined to recruit and retain students who represent the rich diversity of the world in which we live and in which our mission calls us to serve.

Sincerely,

Donald B. Taylor
President
