The 175th anniversary celebrations for Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit Church continues on Tuesday, July 18 with a presentation by City of Detroit historian Jamon Jordan about the downtown and Black Bottom in the early decades of the church.
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the church, which is located at 629 E. Jefferson in Detroit. A wine and cheese reception will follow.
Donations of non-perishable food items will be collected for Crossroads of Michigan, a social service outreach agency that provides counseling, advocacy and material assistance for over 15,000 people each year.
The signature event of the 175th anniversary year of 2023 was a Mass on June 25. The public will also be welcome at a dinner-dance celebration at the Roostertail on Oct. 12.
The parish is the base from which the Jesuits founded the University in 1877. It’s the oldest church building in Detroit, founded in 1848, and provides meals, clothing and services every day to hundreds of Detroiters experiencing homelessness.
