Author Kevin Boyle ’82 will discuss his book, Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights and Murder in the Jazz Age, on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. in Room 113 of the Ford Life Sciences Building. Boyle, who received a National Book Award for this nonfiction work, tells the true story of Ossian Sweet, the grandson of a slave, whose defense of his home in an all-white neighborhood on Detroit’s east side led to tragedy both outside and inside the courthouse.
This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. The Alpha Sigma Nu Detroit Alumni Board, the Detroit Mercy Student chapter of Alpha sigma Nu and the Catholic Studies Program sponsor this event.
Boyle holds a chair in American history at Northwestern University in Chicago. A play based on this book about the Ossian Sweet murder trial, was performed by the Detroit Mercy Theatre Company a few years ago.
